MBB: Coaching Hot Seat

Mods: could we please make this a general MBB: Coaching Hot Seat thread, even if it's mostly going to be about Hubert Davis? I'm never comfortable with the UNC-centric threads on DBR. (Yes, even the wildly popular Belichick circus thread.)

Trilly Donovan has a free article on Basket Under Review that looks ahead to the coaching carousel, with a focus on Coach Davis.

The article also looks at the early success of Jai Lucas at Miami, and mentions Nolan Smith at Tennessee State as another coach having a good first year.
I don't know who runs accnation.net, but the names in this article made me laugh:

Whoever wrote this article forgot to ask AI to include candidates who realistically would consider unc!

Does anyone think unc would actually have the courage to go outside their family tree and hire someone like Jerrod Calhoun?

Wonder how the presence of the Big Bill Circus would affect the attractiveness of replacing Hubert right now. Seems that the Cheat fanclub has moved on from basketball to a certain extent ($$).

UNC finally made some effort to hire a GM who seemed moderately well qualified but was late to the game. As far as I know they are still twiddling their thumbs on the Dean Dome renovation/replacement (correct me if I'm wrong on this),
Carolina being slow to the GM thing was a major mistake on their part. Duke being the national leader at this shows how forward thinking Scheyer and Nina King are. We are quite lucky to have them.
I don't know what they are doing in terms of finances for NIL, their staff is all alums (which is wonderful but some diversity of thought is critical in this era). A new coach will want to know that he is being set up to succeed and compete on a level playing field. UNC should have the resources.
Carolina has alums willing to pony up the money. Their NIL budget this year was reported to be $14 million, which likely puts them among the ten (maybe 5) highest spending teams in the college hoops game. Their good-but-not-great performance this year is not because they did not spend on a roster. Although it is worth noting that UNC has often had to go after second and third choices in recent years because it appears top tier portal and high schoolers are not exactly enamored of Hubert's track record and don't really want to play for him.

UNC doesn’t pay its basketball coaches market wages, so they could buy out Davis’ contract pretty easily. Getting a big name replacement would cost them, though.

Based on their current trajectory, I think he will be gone. If they don't rally to be a clear top 3 team in the ACC or have at least an Elite 8 NCAA tourney run, I suspect they will move on to someone else.

The recruiting is not going well this season and unless Dylan Mingo picks them (he is seen as a strong Baylor lean) then the Heels are fairly likely to not have any first round draft picks on next year's team. It is just super hard to win without top end talent and it looks like Carolina may not have any next season.

Sure, the portal can provide a lot of help, but building only around portal talent is more difficult than folks think. Michigan is really the only top ten team to have done that this season and there are a lot of examples of teams who completely overhauled their roster with portal talent who are now stumbling a lot more than folks expected (hello Wolfpack!).

But I think the single thing that may sink Hubert more than anything else is the way Scheyer has crushed it in the post-legendary coach era compared to how Hubert has done. Duke is absolutely dominant in recruiting -- putting multiple lottery-level talents onto the floor every game -- while also being a perennial top ten team that has dominated the ACC the past few seasons. Duke's players are the talk of colege basketball and the team appears to be very well coached. For Carolina to see their hated rival soaring while their program flounders... well, it just makes things that much tougher for Hubert.
A complicating factor in all this is Carolina is transitioning from current AD (Bubba) to new AD over the summer. Will either want to spearhead a coaching search this spring? Timing is not ideal for that.

When’s the last time the UNC AD played a role in hiring a head coach in a revenue sport - Larry Fedora?
