Maliq Brown injury vigil

as far as we know Brown could have had anything from a mild contusion to the knee to a torn ACL from the information shared with us

FWIW, billy is an orthopedic surgeon; he speaks with experience and authority.

Good to know and respect that. I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV. I work for an orthopedic company, our customers are orthopedic and sports medicine surgeons. I've even had the dubious honor of having my own ACL repaired by a Duke team physician. I'll maintain that the above statement is still challenging. If Duke has acknowledged that imaging has been done and continues to categorize the knee injury as a "sprain" (I don't know this for sure, I don't watch every press conference, but it seems consistent with what I've heard), but it turns out that it's an actual ACL tear, that to me would go beyond "keeping information close to the vest" and into the arena of misinformation.

You'd think so. But, technically, a torn ACL is a grade 3 sprain (just look up the ICD-10 code for ACL tear if you don't believe me). As a sports medicine trained orthopedic surgeon, I have to take everything I'm told with a grain of salt. Trust, but verify. Even from orthopedic colleagues.
Fair enough. As you note, we unfortunately don't have the ability to verify, so I guess we just have to wait. I for one would be absolutely shocked if it is an ACL tear based on information provided.

By the way, I'm shocked to see the ICD code categorize an ACL tear as a sprain; it's humbling when you think you are informed on a topic and facts get in the way. That's why you went to medical school and I'm just an Engineer/MBA who think he knows what he's talking about.

Is billy available tomorrow morning around 8:45AM? Having surgery on my left knee for a torn medial meniscus. I would rather have someone I know doing the surgery. I think my surgeon got his degree in Grenada. Maybe online.
Unfortunately, no. But, best wishes for a speedy recovery!

discerning ANYTHING from Duke officials about injuries is just a pointless exercise, it really is. There was once a time when real injury updates existed, but they ended when the last Oldsmobile wobbled off the assembly line.
Long before that. The last Olds was about 2002 or 2003.

Technically, an ACL injury is considered a knee sprain. The fact that he came back to the bench so quickly and ruled him out for the rest of the game, makes me think that they diagnosed some instability. I hope that's not the case but Coach Jon's comments aren't encouraging either. If it was just stretching of the ligament or even a minor tear (grade 1), then possibly back 3-4 weeks. However, if it was an ACL tear (high grade), they would have already scheduled him for surgery at this point because surgery is the only option for this kind of tear, assuming you want to continue playing high level sports.

I recognize injuries happen in sports, but definitely a bummer that it was inflicted by his own teammate on a shot clock buzzer beater that was a great move to the basket and just a total "freak accident" with where he fell....Of course don't begrudge Gillis at all, but just a bummer that Maliq happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time! Those bumping of the knees....Get well soon, we need you!

As long as Maliq makes it back before mid-Feb, I'm sticking with my usual glass half-full.

Khaman is playing more minutes. And as good Maliq is, our ceiling is the roof with the growth trajectory Khaman is currently on.

I think the risk of Pat hitting the portal was low anyway, but hopefully this hooks him on the path to future Duke stardom. He's come a long way already after missing a year of development.

Sorry if this was posed earlier...asking the clinicians on the board, but can a tear be characterized as a sprain? I believe CJS said, "He sprained his knee." I took solace that there was no mention of a tear, but now I am wondering if a mild tear could be called a sprain.

Yes it can. If you want an extensive discussion, you don't have to scroll back very far. 🤓

I'm a Brown fan.
I hope his being held out is precautionary.

I know the leg is the current concern; before that he was nursing a toe issue.
Working Big Pat, giving Man-man more run and even sliding Gillis over to the 5 as needed - I hope all of this has the Whittenburg effect and gives the guys more confidence and reps so we are stronger when Brown does come back... or we at a minimum know we have viable options if fouls become an issue for Brown in a game..

You may be on to something. Give him a week of practice and bring him back to the Wake game. Works for me.

There may be something to this since Patrick is looking more comfortable out there. He had some nice assists to Cooper and the alley oop dunk. Correction. The box score says one assist but I thought I saw 2
