Based on a photo I received in a private newsletter that I don't know if I have permission to share, you can also add Gene Banks, Vince Taylor, Kenny Dennard, and Bob Bender--the 1979-1980 starting lineup, along with Gminski. Don't know if all were fully participating, though.

At Washington Duke a participant said lots of injuries. Unfortunately it can happen
Middle-aged (or older) men (not sure if there are any women participating?) trying to play semi-competitive basketball. Not a wise move, IMHO. I assume the participants have to sign a tightly-worded release of liability form before enrolling in the camp. I don't know if anyone has keeled over with a heart attack during any of the camps? (Trying not to be negative here, sorry).

I remember the old saying "You can't make the club in the tub" ! Fortunately that doesn't apply at K Academy. Ice bags and IcyHot are valuable commodities.I hope injuries are minor and every participant is having the time of their lives !

The nightmare situation is to spend all of this money then to pull a hammy (or worse) an hour into it so you can't participate. The rest of the activities and bonding are great but it would not be the same. A family member went to something similar as a bucket list item and got into the best shape of his life to do his best to avoid injury (he was successful).

I believe there is a related golf track for those who prefer - play golf with various Duke people then participate in the basketball-related evening activities.

Other schools have attempted to have camps similar to K Academy but it is by far the gold standard - it is much bigger than any of the others. It is a great fund raiser for the Emily K Center, I believe it now kicks off some nice NIL payments, and it is huge for building the brotherhood brand.

Is there a "nap track" available? Take a long nap in the afternoon and then participate in the evening activities?

Two of my college friends attended last year, one tore his achilles and the other tore his ACL

This article is 15 years old but it seems to capture the spirit of the event, and the injury totals

The camp sounds like a real money maker for Duke Hospital!

Had a friend participate a few years ago.

He confirmed that the training staff did an amazing job getting people ready to play everyday. And he said that the day after when he flew out, with no treatment, he felt like he was 90 years old walking through RDU.

And he confirmed, some major injuries happen every year, ACLs, achilles

I think it's a real money maker for a lot of things. Ferryfor50 will have to clue us in (and I know other DBRers have attended), but it sounds like there is a lot of encouragement to spend at the silent auctions. I think the Emily K center is the prime beneficiary so that' a good cause.

Gene and Vince are coaching. Kenny I think is doing the golf stuff.

Russ "Hot Frosty" Hainline, aka @DukeBetter aka the co-host of the Crazie Cast podcast attended K Academy as a +1 of his buddy and shares what he saw and experienced in a Crazy Cast pod. The talk about the current team starts around 20 minutes in.

I listed to both podcasts (DBR and Crazie Cast) and they seem to agree on most of the player takeaways. Cam, Khamenia, Evans and Wilkins were specifically called out. Nice to get some consensus; as I recall there was a case a year ago with some conflicting reports on how certain players looked, likely due to small sample sizes and day to day variance. Hopefully after the players settle in we'll start to get some raw uncut (totally cut) video.
