Jayson Tatum named Duke's first ever CBO, Chief Basketball Officer

Donald and I did a podcast about the Tatum news yesterday: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/RRTET7320327183?selected=RRTET6632955185

I'm a bit shocked at how many of you seem to think this is largely a PR stunt or that this is merely a recruiting tool. I am absolutely certain this is an effort by Scheyer and Tatum to have one of the 5-10 best basketball players in the world make a real impact on the lives and careers of current Duke players.
I am shocked, shocked, Jason, that you think there is cynicism on the internet.

I agree with you completely! Jon Scheyer is not the type of person to do anything just for the PR stunt. And Jayson Tatum certainly doesn't have to spend his time doing any of this. It definitely comes off as far more than a PR stunt to me!

"provide ongoing perspective throughout the season"? c'mon. Did they not have enough perspective before?
Who provided the perspective previously that Tatum can provide? When Tatum was at Duke, I recall Duke producing videos where the coaching staff provided insight into how they broke down particular offensive sets and action involving Tatum and how he could attack various defensive options.

He’s been doing this stuff at the extreme cutting edge in the most competitive arenas against the highest caliber players and staff.

You think he doesn’t have a perspective that a college staff doesn’t have? Seems a bit of a stretch.

JT might well share his perspective on how tough the league is to play in. I can certainly see his advice helping at season end with players' decisions to declare for the draft or return to Duke.

I don't think you are reading the room at all. I think several people said "worst case" it is a PR stunt. But having just reviewed to 40 posts before yours, the majority thought it is more than that. No need to be shocked - I'm shocked that you are shocked. But this is typical DBR fare - take the one or two outlier response and gigantify it and run with that narrative.

Reportedly, this is Jayson volunteering his time so no money involved for those who were worried/mentioned that ...
Well, Jason did sign a 5-year $314 million dollar contract with the Celtics. If my math is right, that averages out to more than $62 million per year or over $1 million per WEEK. Even in these inflationary times, you can live a decent life on that salary.

I assume Jason did run this by the Celtics management before accepting the Duke offer. My guess is that he had to assure them that it would not require much of his time, effort, or concentration during the NBA season.

Yeah, probably already discussed. It's not like Jayson wouldn't have a suitable place to practice and rehab on trips to Durham.

This is where I am. Worst case is that this is just marketing PR and nothing really comes of it, but no real downside exists.
I disagree, actually. The downside is the first part: Given what they've said he'll do, if this turns out to be just a PR/marketing ploy, the word will get out and it will likely make Duke seem "fake". I think it actually has the potential to seriously harm the concept of The Brotherhood if it's not a genuine contribution.

But the flip side is that every substantive interaction a Duke player has with Tatum will become known. Players talk to other players, and news filters out from there. If this is a real relationship - and based on what we've seen so far, I have no reason to doubt that it is completely genuine - then it's absolute gold.

Great move, IMO.

Sorry if I missed it, but have there been any updates regarding Jayson's "CBO" role with the team this year?
Besides giving the guys shoes, I haven't heard anything. I'm not sure where he's at in his own recovery so I don't know how much time he's spending in Durham but I wonder if he'll be there Saturday.
