Hurricane Milton

On a quick "gut reaction" level, seems like Helene caused more damage to western NC than Milton to FL. Probably because Milton was a smaller/faster moving system even if the maximum wind speeds were higher. Helene was just a huge system that dumped excessive amounts of rain -- so not the wind as much, but the flooding. Although the associated tornados with Milton wreaked havoc certainly. Could also be because coastal FL is theoretically more prepared than western NC for these sorts of events (i.e. houses/buildings are supposed to built with hurricane resistance in mind).

Hoping for the best for everyone impacted. Neither of them were "small" by any means as it relates to damage, but that's my impression from people impacted.

One reason for the severe problems in western NC is the mountainous terrain concentrates the water in the river valleys where the towns are. Also the water flows through quickly. It doesn't stay as long but it causes more flash floods than in the flatlands.

I am following Milton closely, as I did with Helene, having personal and family interests and I concur with you. IMO, we in Florida pretty much dodged a bullet in Milton.

The French Broad River crested at 23.1', over 5' higher than it's previous record and only it's second time over 15'. It's the rivers that did all the damage in Helene.

We made it through. A lot of cleanup this morning. Lost some shingles, large tree branches, some water seeping in from our back door, and portions of the neighbor’s fence. We also lost power at 8 PM last night. It was restored just in time this afternoon, as it was beginning to heat up outside again.

Thankfully my Mom's house kept their power. She's bedbound (probably for the remainder of her life) so I was relieved.

We are all safe and sound with no real damage. But it was the worst storm I’ve ever been through in 30 years living here an hour north of Tampa.

While this is indeed excellent news, we all know what it means in the long run. At some point -- probably all too soon -- some other "monster" storm will pop up and head toward Florida. Officials will sound the alarm about the unsurvivable storm surge... and people will say "oh, remember that time they told us to evacuate and everything was fine? We don't need to leave this time."

Maybe. I worry more about continued building in places like Florida.

It could be that rising insurance costs put a brake on Florida development.

That’s something that’s been said for over a decade. It hasn’t really come to pass. More people believe the weather people than other scientists because then don’t see them as academics. The weather is usually delivered by individuals that people see daily on their TV news along side local stories. It’s a different type of relationship that people trust more. Of course every storm has its nutters but natural disasters are one of the things where the majority of people haven’t lost their damn minds over.

My hiking buddy and I were supposed to do about 20 miles of the Appalachian Trail next weekend in GA. Now, wondering if we can even do it in the spring.

Thankfully or power is back on, but no internet or cable for another week or two projected. So don’t tell me how the Braves are doing — no spoilers please.
