UNC is 2-3, after managing to disappoint anyone not wearing Duke blue for five games. They still have to face Cal, Stanford, Wake, UVA, Stanford, and our Blue Devils (I'm pleased to see this back at the end of the season again, always felt weird facing them early).

My personal preference is for UNC to win JUST enough games to keep this experiment afloat for another year. I know some of you feel differently, which is fine.

But my question is - with two wins to date and six games ahead, how many total wins keep Coach Bill in Chapel Hill come next season?

If the 33rd NFL Team(tm) can't even make a college bowl game, it's hard to see how they don't heave a heavy sigh and leverage the assistant coach's violations to threaten termination for cause and negotiate a buyout. But if they do, they can lick their wounds and say, "He just needs time."

They are in a very difficult position. At this point, I don’t see a viable path to terminating BB this season, primarily due to the lack of a suitable interim candidate on staff. My sense is that they will endure the remainder of the season and revisit the situation during the off-season.

As for what decision might be made, it's hard to predict. As others have noted, it likely hinges on whether the organization has the financial resources to buy out the current coaching staff’s contracts while still being able to attract a qualified replacement.

In the meantime - pass the popcorn!

4 more wins would a 100% improvement over the 1st half of the season but does anyone see where they are coming from? Maybe Stanford is 1? Syracuse is not looking great since losing their QB, but I think both of them are more talented than UNC right now. Something would have to radically change for UNC to beat UVA, Wake, Duke and NCSU, and I still don't see them getting past Cal.

Cal is the final indictment on this team in my opinion. UNC would have had its second bye week after having even more holes exposed in both sides of their game post Clemson, if there is NO improvement at that point, then there simply won't be for the rest of the season. Cal won't try to embarrass UNC, but Wilcox is also fighting for his job to a lesser extent and for bowl eligibility. They will play like they have something to lose.

The turning point though, is not the Cal game. Its UVA. Historic rivalry, explosive offense, they're trying to get to Charlotte and haven't lost since NCSU. I expect UVA to give UNC a beating that makes the JMU smackdown look competitive in comparison, we'll be remembering that 70+ pt beatdown ECU gave them in 2014. If the score is bad enough, they let Belichick and his staff go hoping for the dead cat bounce vs the last 4 games of the season. So Cal is to see if this team has any life left. UVA is to see if BB makes it to the end of the season or gets dumped before the rest of the big 4 pay UNC a visit (and all of them looking to improve their record for bowl purposes, if not more)

I guess the question is does the team up and quit on him, and if so when.

Old risk averse coots like me stay in a miserable job for decades because they were lucky enough to be one of the last half dozen people in the whole country to score a defined benefit pension.

Built different are kids in Generation whatever stupid letter we just made up for people born between 2000-something 2000-something else. And if this whirlpool really picks up steam, dudes will be hitting the transfer portal at halftime of the inflection point game.

I think there's no way that school admits defeat, even going winless the rest of the way. The buyout is too big, plus the sheer embarrassment of doing so prevents them from doing so... Which is great! This is the joke that keeps on giving...

A way I do see Belichick not being there next year is that they get him to resign retire, with an undisclosed amount of moohlah showing up in Smilin' Bill's offshore bank account...

They've been a sleeping giant since 1888 when they went 0-2. 1 loss to the CA/Stanford/Syracuse group will reduce them to spoiler for the Duke/UVA/NCSU/Wake group. I can't see them beating two of the latter for a bowl, but they can still be Big 4 champions. Right now it's Duke 1-0, NCSU 1-1, UNC 0-0, Wake 0-1.

The body language at Cal looks like Franks 2003/Roof 2007/Cutcliffe 2021. It wouldn't surprise me if Cal fires Wilcox because of a loss to them. The CA talent > UNC even if they start Max Johnson. GO BEARS.

Not sure what you’re looking at, but they play State after us and don’t play Stanford twice. Also they play 12 games and if record is 2-3, 7 games remain. Regardless, their schedule is very, very easy.

How Wins Keep Coach Belichik Employed?

What? Mods: can we fix the thread title to say "POLL: How Many Wins Keep Coach Belichick Employed?"

(Also, as possible point of discussion, which Coach Belichick are we talking about? Bill, Steve, or Brian?)

UNC made a lot of mistakes here but the biggest one they made is they didn’t realize they were negotiating with someone who didn’t actually have leverage. No one else was offering bill a job and I say this as a UNC fan. He’s arguably the greatest coach in NFL history and the best job he can get is a mid-level job in the ACC? No NFL job and no power two conference job.

And so what does UNC do they give him $10 million a year which is on the high end of college salaries and they agreed to hire two of his kids and his best buddy is GM at another 1.5 million a year and the GM’s kid that’s the quarterback coach

I think he’s gonna ride this gravy train for another year. And I will continue to make commitment to not watching until they get another coach.

A very rational post and thanks for the perspective.

No reason he would leave unless someone drops by his office with a check for $40 million. None

It's not a pleasant thing to watch obviously, this downward spiral of arguably the most accomplished coach in NFL history as he reaches the end of his viability and relevance to the sport. It’s either hang on to the UNC job if wants to remain in coaching or retire. I’d brand this point of view as being despicably ageist if Bill didn’t project the visage of callous indifference but injecting energy and enthusiasm into the culture is one of the key responsibilities of coaching at the college level and unfortunately Bill ain’t “bringing it.”
