Sir Winston. Never one to put off an off put. This is the kind of grammatical nitpicking "up with which I shall not put," as Winston Churchill once quipped.

Two words:If an NFL team thinks he has the right talent, I don’t think they will care about what seemed to be a disloyal or somewhat unethical late move in college.
I DO think he thought he would have a better chance at a championship and Heisman if he played for a contender. I personally think his Heisman and draft stock could/would have been as good or better at Duke. If he (or the team) doesn’t perform up to the highest expectations at Miami, there will be criticism, even if it isn’t his fault. At Duke, the risk of criticism for losses or mistakes would have been much lower, and the support for positive outcomes would have been huge. Sometimes a good QB with a decent team gets a lot more credit than a decent QB with a good team…especially if championship expectations are not met.
What Mensah did signing with Miami is not a crime, especially not one of the violent SA variety, so its an empty comparison. And even then, the Browns still signed Watson, so I'm not sure what the point is here.
It’s a shame that all this great nitpicking isn’t on the Off Topic Board and is instead buried in a thread about some guy that doesn’t play for Duke. This is the kind of grammatical nitpicking "up with which I shall not put," as Winston Churchill once quipped.
There are innumerable examples of names that you can use for yourself or are acceptable among friends and such, but their use by others is NOT acceptable. They haven't earned the privilege. Not when I was at Duke. When UNC fans called us Dukies, it rankled.
I will let NYBri speak for himself but I think you are 100% agreeing with him - what he was saying seemed pretty obvious to me. I think he is saying that if team(s) were willing to sign Watson, then what Mensah did is completely trivial by comparison and shouldn't prevent him from getting a job in the NFL. Some might then counter-argue that it might reduce the number of teams that would consider him (I'm guessing many teams would not sign Watson), but that is all hypothetical and I think that conversation has gotten pretty stale. What Mensah did signing with Miami is not a crime, especially not one of the violent SA variety, so its an empty comparison. And even then, the Browns still signed Watson, so I'm not sure what the point is here.
Not one NFL team is going to care about Mensah leaving Duke for Miami, when he is one of hundreds of CFB players that have taken similar actions. And the NFL has a lot more power when it comes to contract breach since they have a CBA and the players are actual employees.
Sure, but of course it cannot logically mean the same thing as “could not care less.”Hey I like to argue that yes, it is possible and not incorrect that a person "could care less."
True....but one should always aim for the real barrier of nihilism for how little one can care. But then you would have to care about not caring, A PARADOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Sure, but of course it cannot logically mean the same thing as “could not care less.”
Maybe. "Kiwi" was a World War I insult aimed at New Zealand troops. It has evolved into a sobriquet or moniker of nationsl pride. My own pet peeve is Duke fans and alumni referring to Duke people as "Dukies." I don't know how on earth that came to be a permissible usage, because it used to be a favorite UNC insult. Now a lot of us say it about ourselves. For crying out loud. STOP IT!
AmenIs it almost time to put this thread to bed. I'm not sure DM deserves this much attention. He's gone and ain't coming back.
I think it’s a little premature awarding Mensah the Heisman.Mensah will win the Heisman next year barring injury or another breakout athlete on a top 3 team. He will not drop in the draft unless he is discovered to be running an illegal Smurf cage fighting and tax evasion operation. Otherwise expect him to be the top 2 QBs picked in the draft. Dude is locked in with a real contender program and top receivers including another poached from Duke. He is already polished, but his PR rep will give him that extra shine to navigate any cold feet discussions about his time at Duke (and Tulane before that). You make the best point: "And at this point I am largely moving on. For all we know he received countless offers that he turned down out of loyalty to Duke and this was just too good to refuse." Me too. Chapter closed. Good luck to him. Next play.
Yankee [Doodle Dandy] was similar, I believe. I use "Dukie" with correct spelling.Maybe. "Kiwi" was a World War I insult aimed at New Zealand troops. It has evolved into a sobriquet or moniker of national pride.
Not a crime, but morally repugnantWhat Mensah did signing with Miami is not a crime, especially not one of the violent SA variety, so its an empty comparison. And even then, the Browns still signed Watson, so I'm not sure what the point is here.

I ran into Crawford Palmer in New Hampshire a few years ago. He played at Dartmouth after Duke. After I asked him if he was Crawford Palmer, he said, "Yes, are you a Dukie?"I'm trying to imagine one of our Duke greats introducing himself that way:
"Hi, I'm Sonny Jurgensen, I'm a Dukie."
"Hi, I'm Art Heyman, I'm a Dukie."
Hi, I'm Mike Curtis. I'm a Dukie."
Hi, I'm Gene Banks. I'm a Dukie."
Wouldn't happen.
Yes, isn't it wonderful to have multiple sports to discuss!!!!Why are the football threads always the first thing I see on this website?
