FB: Duke 27, #22 SMU 28 (OT)

In my opinion, either one of our other quarterbacks would have scored on that last play. Murphy is simply not a runner and it severely limits our play calling. You need more than a big arm to play quarterback at this level. I’m not convinced that any amount of offseason work is going to resolve the problem.
Murphy is a very good pocket passer. But that’s it, he cannot through accurately on rollouts or anytime on the run. And of course, he will not run anyway. His decision to fall down short of the needed 1st down (1st half as I recall) showed he isn’t comfortable running or getting hit while running.

That’s who he is and as long as he’s our QB, passing plays must be designed for the pocket only.

Regarding the punt mentioned by Dr. Maturin that sailed into the end zone, I don't think the punter planned it that way. My take is that he tried to get off one of those high punts that have an end-over-end backwards spin. Maybe a coffin corner effort might have worked. Either way, it's a skill that goes against a punter's primary training.

It’s the primary fight song, “Peruna.” Peruna was apparently a highly alcoholic “cold medicine” during Prohibition. And yes, they play it over and over and over.

I came up from Orlando for the weekend football and basketball combo. That had to be a painfully heartbreaking loss for the players and coaches last night. As a fan, count me in the camp that was hoping for, but didn't really expect, a Duke win; after all, SMU came in a deservedly ranked team with a more potent offense than any of our previous opponents.

My impressions: Our defense was magnificent -- you can't reasonably ask for more than holding them to one score in the second half and creating 6 turnovers; but the most memorable moment in the game to me was that goal-line stand after giving up the big play to SMU -- that was a stout stand for the ages. Our offense was adequate -- they put together some solid drives by mixing an improved passing game with a reliable, modestly successful running attack -- at times it looked as if Spurrier might be calling the plays -- while committing no turnovers; we just had too many missed opportunities and tactical decisions that went wrong. Unfortunately, our special teams proved to be the fatal flaw, as untimely mental errors and mistakes in execution caused us to come up short.

In the end, we can't complain about the effort or the breaks. The fact that an upset would have been thrilling to celebrate doesn't mean that, despite being disappointed by that near miss, we can't appreciate and take pride in the strong showing by our guys. This team is getting better.

SMU is really different from Duke academically. About 40 percent of undergraduates are in what I would group together as "business majors" not offered to undergrads at Duke -- or at Rice, where I went to grad school, and with which SMU would like to compete academically.

John B. is a god poster and I am sure his use of the term weirdos was not based on evil intent.
As an omniscient god, I should have known I got a mention, but there’s a lot going on in the world and sometimes I get distracted.

Oh, and when I guessed that SMU’s leadership would be ambivalent about recruiting the sort of lefty weirdos that are a required part of the path to becoming a more elite academic place, I did mean ‘weirdo’ in the most positive of ways—and Dallas has never celebrated lefty weirdness; that’s for Austin and California, etc.

Tough loss. Last night had the potential to be an early signature win for the Manny Era. What impressed me most last night was Duke played well enough to win (great defense, positive steps for the offense and Murphy) and poorly enough to lose (not so special teams, failing to capitalize on TOs). Positive azzefkram is very happy that Duke was competitive with a Top-25 caliber opponent in what many assumed would be a rebuilding year.

I like that Manny went for the win. It's not his fault that the ACC assigned a spineless crew to the game. If it's PI at any other point in the game, it's PI on the last play. Throw the frickin flag.

Man, that one was tough. For some reason, I'm not as down as you guys are. This was a game I expected to lose, and we turned it into a 50-50 game. Our guys made a ton of plays in the process, including another 4th quarter comeback. The resilience of this team is remarkable. Obviously the ending was gut wrenching, but I left feeling better about our team.

The Good:

- That's 3 straight great crowds/environments at Wally Wade, even though SMU brough nobody. The atmosphere was great as we made our late charge.

- Maalik Murphy had a genuine breakthrough. He threw two perfect deep balls (only one of which was caught), made better reads, and a lot of nice sharp throws. It wasn't perfect, of course. I know he wants that last play back (FTR, I don't think it was DPI). But if we get more performances like this, we'll win some games.

- WR play was excellent. Have a day, Eli Pancol! It has been great to see him have a nice comeback season. Aside from the one deep ball, the WRs caught everything thrown at them. Jake Taylor, who was overwhelmed in his first start, looked better in blocking and even caught a nice pass.

- Opportunistic defense. Yes, SMU made mistakes and there is always a bit of luck in turnovers, but we also made some plays. Two of our interceptions came when our DBs jumped routes and made a great play on the ball. Tre Freeman's pick came from really good pressure.

- Credit to the remarkable effort from Alex Howard on that chasedown tackle. And then the defense for the goalline stop. This team FIGHTS.

The Bad:

- I'm not a fire the coach kind of guy, but... Manny is going to have to take a hard look at our special teams coaching. There have been way too many breakdowns this season. This time, it cost us the game.

- I praised Todd Pelino for his clutch kicks last week. Ugh. I don't know what happened but it seemed like he couldn't get any lift on his kicks all night. I haven't seen a replay of the block, but I'm sure the trajectory had to have played a part. It should be nearly impossible to block a short FG if you kick it well.

- When we weren't forcing turnovers, the defense got pushed around a bit. The defensive front had by far its worst game of the season, with no sacks, 2 TFL, and getting outplayed by their OL much of the game. Then, unfortunately, we gave up some big plays. The two long passes and the overtime TD came from breakdowns, something that hasn't happened much this year.

- Our last 3 possessions in the 4th Q. After two really nice TD drives, we just sputtered. You simply cannot waste chances like that when you're trying to pull off an upset.

- What is with college bands that basically only play one song? For some reason, SMU's is "She'll be coming around the mountain." Weird. Maybe that's a Texas thing or something.

The Realistic:

- SMU failed to score inside the 5 twice and turned the ball over on 5 other possessions. In reality we may have been fortunate to be tied late. SP+ has our post game win expectancy at 26.4%. I guess that's why I don't feel as bad. To me it feels like a game we nearly stole, rather than a game we blew. YMMV.

- I'm okay with Manny's game management. At the end of regulation, we had the chance to hold for one. We executed everything but the kick. Could we have been more aggressive and gone for the TD? Perhaps, but that also might have allowed SMU to get the ball back. Then in OT, I think either kicking the PAT or going for 2 are acceptable choices. Given our kicking struggles, you CANNOT lose that game on a missed PAT. Manny trusted the Murphy/Pancol connection, and we ran a play that got the 1 on 1 coverage we wanted. Maalik just didn't make the throw. So it goes.

- If our offense can solidify the gains made last night, we can absolutely beat State, VT, and Wake. As for next week, who knows?
I think this is the most fair assessment of the game. Lots of good, some bad. I think the ST is a bigger concern than the OC, the offense did enough to win the game, but special teams didn't convert in winning time. There's still improvement the offense needs to make but our best hope was the offense could keep up with SMU, and they did that.
The question now is how is the emotional state of the team and are they focused for a tough Miami game? Sometimes under Cutcliffe the team didn't always respond well after a tough loss, that improved under Elko. This one is a gut punch so we'll see how Manny handles it.

yeah, a most unusual game, we blew a lot of opportunities, but I'm still happy where we are. I expect at least two more wins and a bowl win which would be an incredible season all things considered.
I agree 2 or more wins gives us an incredible season. Most Duke fans, including me didn't think Duke would win 6 games. However, Coach Manny has performed a near miracle. With just an average place kicker, we would be celebrating a win over a top 25 team. I do have a question though, is our starting QB is as slow as some posters have mentioned. The times I've seen him run he looks to have average speed. He's at least as fast as some former Duke QBs. I know he's not Daniel Jones fast, but he looks like he could run the option once in a while. When he hands off to the RB, the opposing team doesn't even pay attention to him.

GoDuke!

it would appear that, primarily, he is disinclined to run...very interesting to see what Manny does about the offense in the offseason...

Remembering the Northwestern game where he ran and had the fumble call reversed it’s fine that he doesn’t run. One of our strengths is we don’t turn over the ball. That is more important to this team than a five yard scramble a few times a game. So far in overtime Murphy has been perfect. If remembering correctly two touchdown passes out of 2 passes and a pass to the one yard line on the other. I have never seen a quarterback at Duke who throws the ball as well as Murphy get so much criticism. In 8 games at Duke he has 17 passes for a touchdown. In 7 games last year Riley had 3 and he rushed for four more. This is his first year as a full time starter. We should be giving him some love!

yeah, it's a tough crowd....plus it is very difficult to separate the strengths and weaknesses of the offensive coordinator (he also takes a lot of criticism). For all our injuries, we've done pretty well considering our talent level...
