FB: Duke 23, Wake Forest 17

I saw discussion of what he dud but nothing about who was the target of the gesture. Is there a link?
Its was in the Manny Diaz press link at goduke.com Not excusing the behavior, but it gives context for the action. Murphy will take whatever punishment is doled out and move on.

Things change so much. Do the bowls pick the teams in order of prestige, or does the ACC decide where schools go? At one time records prevented teams with fewer losses from "jumping" into a better bowl.

large boozing white men decide based on how they feel. While there is a pecking order based on records, teams are always susceptible to being bumped if a large local public school becomes available, just because they want to maximize ticket sales....this happens often.

Budwom pretty much nails it. There used to be a one win limit on jumping. A 9-3 team could be jumped over by an 8-4 team but not a 7-5 team. I’m unsure if that protocol still exists.

This one seems pretty straightforward. We're the better team. Wake has a *terrible* pass defense. We should have success throwing the ball. Offensively, they can pass it a bit, but pass defense is our strength. It looks like a good match up for us all around.

I was a bit worried that they would be playing for a bowl game this weekend. Thankfully, they've lost their last two and have nothing tangible to play for.

I don't expect a romp, but if we play well and avoid turnovers, I expect a win.

Senior Day is always a day that a team is eager to play spoiler.

The days of "act like you've been there" are long long gone.

I'm no pearl clutcher, but I do get weary of the constant gesturing, chest-thumping, whining-to-refs, me first junk. It seems to have filtered its way from the professional levels, to the top tier prospects, and now to whatever Duke is. I'm not so prim as to say that it ruins the games for me, but it does make me feel like it has passed me by to a degree.
Agreed. Celebrating every catch, every first down, and every defensive pass break up is a bit much.

I love it when a player scores a big touchdown and stoically hands the ball to the ref.

I’m old now.

Yup. Going way back to the Mark Gastineau sack dance, I think the NFL decided the posturing added spice to the game and let it go as long as it was not extreme "taunting"--and then they let that go, too, although it is still not permitted in college.

I don't mind seeing a player with a little personality, but you can celebrate and express yourself a bit without being an a*****.

I felt like the football wheels would fall off after Elko's departure. The job Manny has done to give us a chance at a 9 win regular season feels nothing short of miraculous to me. I plan on attending what I would imagine to be a sparse stadium on Saturday.
Agreed, especially given the departures of Barton (NFL first rounder), Carter (NFL third rounder), Monk (NFL fifth rounder), and four other guys picked up an undrafted NFL free agents (Calhoun, Franklin, Blades, Jones), Leonard (pretty terrific college starting QB), Waters (our leading rusher), and Peebles (a very solid defensive lineman)…

That’s 10 of 21 starters that were very good. I’m probably not including other starters that graduated.

We also lost players to the portal who are probably pretty talented because they landed at big time schools. Brandon Johnson to Oregon, Dorian Maury to Auburn, and RJ Oben to Notre Dame.

I’d say that Manny’s done a darn fine job.

After the worst performance of the season I think Duke is due for some inspiring football. No facemask tackles, poor passing resulting in interceptions. No holding or false starts. I think 34 -17 will be a Duke win. Two field goals for Todd Pelino. Hope our running game can add to the offense. I think the lineman will want to redeem themselves from the Virginia Tech game. Defense have the ability to stop explosive plays.

I dunno, Heyman. We beat our nemesis, VT, 31-28. I agree that our defense was poor most of the game, but it came through twice in the last 6 minutes. Maybe it shows the benefits of a 14-0 start.

Seems that way yet only 3 pt favorites. Hope Manny has a plan for that annoying mesh offense

How's everyone feeling about the weather tomorrow? Having never been there, does Wake ("Allegacy Stadium") tend to feel warmer or colder than the temp this time of year? I know stadiums can vary compared to how much the structure keeps in heat and keeps out wind, or vice versa, leading to a 20+ degree difference in what it can feel like (57 or 37, with the forecast high of 47). I'd of course seek a seat on the east/visitors' side to remain in the sun.

Would like to make the drive from the triangle to see the team, but 3 hours in the car to be cold for 4 feels like a long day.
