FB: ACC Champs! Duke 27, UVa 20 (OT) (December 6, 2025)

You know we are all in for the football team when a football thread goes off topic
LOL! I think just to keep this on page 1 when there is no football to talk about, we should turn it into the equivalent of that "The Longest Thread Ever" one that it's in the Off Topic board.

Fwiw College football news has their guess of the final AP poll and they have our heroic Blue Devils at #25. That would be nice as it would kickstart our ranking next year.
The last time we were ranked anywhere in the final poll of the year, it was a BCS poll.
So this would be great.

I did a bit more digging, and Duke was last ranked in the final AP poll at #23 after the 2013 season (10 wins, ACC Championship Game berth, narrow Peach Bowl loss to Texas A&M)…which was indeed toward the end of the BCS era. Before that, you have to go back to consecutive poll finishes in 1961-62.

We were most definitely one of the top 25 teams at the end of the season. On a neutral field, I would take us over all the #19-25 teams in the final poll (UNT, JMU, Iowa, GT, Houston, Tulane, UVA).

We beat GT and Tulane again if we play them, and honestly would even like our chances away. We aren’t the same team we were in Nola, and GT isn’t the same team they were in Wade (and even then, we gave that away)

Only team + locale I wouldn’t want to play is Iowa in Iowa City. Otherwise I’d like our chances with the way we played down the stretch, even with our defense

Doubt we beat Iowa on a neutral field. Their 4 losses were by a total of 15 points against strong opponents (Iowa State A, Indiana H, Oregon H and Southern Cal A). And they beat a full strength Vandy squad pretty soundly in the Reliaquest Bowl (game was not as close as the 34-27 final would indicate). Elite defense and special teams plus a very strong O-line that allows for them to control the ball despite modest skill position talent overall.

Hey I qualified the Iowa comment in the paragraphs below! But yeah Iowa is good. The others I think are a bit overrated

All good. My wife’s an Iowa grad and a pretty big sports fan so I’m quite familiar with the football team and the Hawkeye Athletic Program generally (we were early riders on the Caitlin Clark bandwagon).

And agree that we could beat the others. I am still pissed about losing to Tulane. Mensah was understandably jumpy at the start and our defensive scouting and gameplanning was atrocious. Think we would thrash them in a rematch (and hopefully will next 9/5). And would’ve loved another crack at GT too. The fluky 95 yard scoop and score completely changed the complexion of that game. Hopefully we’ll break that losing streak next year.

If we didn’t end up making the ACC title game, I’d have always wondered “what if” on that 95-yard fumble. Which as an aside, is the same way I feel about Ross Martin’s misses against VT in 2014. Beating UVA is redemption for all of it, but yeah I’m 100% with you. Except having an Iowa wife. Mine’s UNC. But she went to Duke for grad school so I forgive her. Also UNC girls are hotter. It’s the most underrated part of the sales pitch
