FB: ACC Champs! Duke 27, UVa 20 (OT) (December 6, 2025)

I think Barkate stays. The only schools he would consider are ND, Vandy, NW, Stanford, and us (and maybe Michigan, but that seems to be dead now with the situation there). Winning the ACC and having Mensah come back have to push him to staying here. ND is the only one I’d be worried about, but I think he’d rather see it through with us.
I agree with this and also agree that ND is the biggest risk. He went to a Catholic high school so is probably Catholic, and most Catholic kids grow up with some emotional connection to ND. But I agree I like our chances.

I grew up Catholic and couldn’t dislike ND any more lol. I also broke my Italian Catholic mother’s heart by turning down Georgetown for Duke though so I’m not the best example

In addition to keeping Sheppard, seems like additional key roster questions will be:

2. Replacing 3 OL starters - same question.
We have several OL reserves who played a significant number of snaps this season plus we have a ESPN300 4* recruit inbound in Sean Stover who could be an immediate impact player. I expect picking up a couple OL in the portal is a priority.

He's a grad transfer, does he have eligibility left?
Barkate spent three seasons as part of the Harvard progrum before coming to Duke, but he appeared in only 4 games in the 2022 season, which I think is still the threshold at which he could theoretically petition the NCAA for another season.
FWIW, I think he’d be more likely to just start his professional career (whether that’s pigskin or investment banking) than to transfer again.

He was NOT announced as a graduating senior (or grad) during the ceremony at the last home game.

I don’t think he would have to petition the NCAA for an additional season. If he only played in four games in 2022, he’s eligible for another season.

Just ran into some former colleagues at Penn State. Two years ago, when Duke hired Manny Diaz away, I opined on this board that it was a really good hire because. he knows what he's doing, his players LOVE to play for him, and he does things the correct way. Yesterday, those colleagues congratulated "us" on our big victory. And now Manny with be coaching against the guy who hired him as defensive coordinator ('cause Penn State let HIM go, too)! SMH

Since we are discussing Barkate, may I ask - did he graduate in 3 years from Harvard or will he finish undergrad at Duke?

If he did already graduate, what graduate degree is he working towards this year?

Finally got the first two of four championship t-shirts I ordered and was surprised to see a bright winged foot on the left sleeve. Went back to the online store to see how I missed that when ordering and it is not visible. If one looks closely, you can barely see it; however, it appears to be blue. It doesn't take away from the message on the front; however, it makes it look like the powers that be hid that on purpose.

That’s the logo of “League”, the maker of the shirt. Same as if you had a Nike swoosh on the shirt.

Per his bio on GoDuke, Barkate earned a degree in economics from Harvard and is working on a master’s in management studies.

There have been 18 Duke FB conference champions -- 10 in the Southern Conference and 8 in the ACC

The 2025 team can join the 1944 and 1954 teams as the only ones in Duke history with a conference championship + bowl win + win over UNC.

Conference champion ... National rank per SRS .... Record ... UNC game result .... Bowl Result

1933 ... 22 / 126 ... 9-1 ... W 21-0 ... n/a

1954 ... 21 / 111 ... 8-2-1 ... W 47-12 ... W Orange
1955 ... 16 / 110 ... 7-2-1 ... W 6-0 ... n/a

1960 ... 32 / 113 ... 8-3 ... L 6-7 ... W Cotton
1961 ... 14 / 111 ... 7-3 ... W 6-3 ... n/a
1962 ... 20 / 120 ... 8-2 ... W 16-14 ... n/a

1989 ... 36 / 106 ... 8-4 ... W 41-0 ... L All-American

2025 ... 41 / 136 ... 8-5 ... W 32-25 ... Sun Bowl

1960 is the only of the 18 Duke conference champs to lose to UNC ... but went on to win the Cotton Bowl.

Duke conference champs finishing top-10 in SRS nationally: 1935, 1936, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1943 (6x in 9-year span)

Need to dig up some old OlyFan explanation as to why the non-champion 1957 Duke team (6-3-2; 15th nationally SRS) played in a bowl game while conference champ NCSU (7-1-2; 25th nationally SRS) did not. State finished 15th in AP poll and Duke 16th.
