FB: #5 Miami 53, Duke 31 Postgame Thread

I maintain the squib killed us. Was it just a bad kick? Tell me it wasn't strategic.
It was a bad play call, but the TD Miami scored afterwards would have happened whether Miami ran the play from the 25 or 50.

In the second half, their OL manhandled us and their defense adjusted to what we had been exploiting and Murphy had no answer. One of their DLs started living in our backfield. We made some individual plays to keep things close for a while, and then missed some key tackles.

But what was the rationale? Were we worried that special teams was gonna give up seven? We handed them the ball at midfield when we were hanging in.

I knew it was going to be a long day when my flight to FLL got canceled at 7AM after a fender bender between planes at the gate. I guess getting a refund from Jetblue is going to be the highlight.

You can't read anything into games against Stanford, but State just walloped them 59-28. They will be going for bowl eligibility, and I don't think we'll be lucky enough for a noon game over there.

Assuming Maalik is a real "student of the game" (have no doubt that he is), with more game experience, studying game film, etc, I see him minimizing turnovers and continuing to improve. Sure, this game got away from us in the end, but we had a much more talented team on the ropes for awhile even with some mistakes. Here's to continued improvement...by both the team and staff (as they become more familiar with each other's strengths & weaknesses.) As we like to say - next play.

There are certainly positive takeaways from this game but the bottom line is Miami had too much talent for us to handle.
Yep, Bob. Bigger, faster, stronger and better football players. That usually wins games. I'm proud of the way Duke came back in the first half (After those first two easy Miami TD's, I was thinking this might be a 42-6 type of game) and they just ran out of steam in the second half. It hurt when Duke couldn't score in the late third quarter (to take the lead) and had to settle for a field goal, to be down by one point. I agree with the announcers who thought Duke should have gone for the TD on 4th down (as they said, field goals were not going to win the game). Plus, some bad passes by Malik hurt our momentum at times. I'm no QB expert but it seems like he throws quite a few passes where there is little to no chance of a reception by the Duke receivers and we saw a couple of interceptions on those throws today, that hurt our chances.

I agree! Like a lot of longtime Duke Football fans, I've become tolerant of player miscues. I've become philosophical about the games.

But when I watched that squib kick, I saw red! That one play may not have killed us, but it surely left me - and the team - wounded.

Not sure what everyone else has said before me, but as a basketball fan that enjoys football to get through the downtime until basketball season, it’s nice that Duke football is at least competitive in these games. “These games“ meaning games against the number five team in the nation. A 22 point loss is “competitive?” Yes it is. We went down early, came storming back and were up in the second half. The more talented team ultimately won, but it wasn’t like it was over in the first quarter. Actually, it was over in the first quarter, and but we came back and took the lead. So again, I’m liking that we have a competitive football team whether we ultimately win these games or not.
Go Duke! 9F!

Are we all agreed to just not talk about this game? Strangely quiet.
I don’t want to come on here and just gripe. Griping gets tiresome after a while. Nobody wants to hear it really. And yet my disappointment is hard to articulate in any other way. Rinse-wash-repeat. I was disappointed in Murphy’s decision-making today at times and particularly disappointed with the fg-producing possession when Duke had first and goal and ran 3 pass plays with little misdirection and little chance of a completion. Maybe Santa will bring Duke a QB who isn’t one-dimensional for Christmas
To focus on the positives Jordan Moore was spectacular today and should be a strong contender for 1st Team All-ACC. Rivers as well had a good game at least until I turned it off after the TD following the squib kick to go excavate a septic tank at one of my rental properties, which kind of summed up today’s game for me. What’s more fun than losing to Miami? Here’s a thought….

Just announced 3:30pm kick next Sat.

(On a side rant- I really hate not knowing FB game times until a week or 2 before the game. All of the BB game times are set through MARCH 2025! Come on FB! I know- it’s a TV thing. But BB is on TV too)

While the last 25 minutes were Not Great Bob (completely my lovely bride's fault for returning from shopping and messing with the feng shui of my viewing environs), there were some positives. The offense was better and more diverse. The defense was able to hang with the top rated offense for a half. Special teams took two steps forward and only one step back. For more than half of the game, Duke certainly looked like it belonged on the field.

I knew Duke needed a 14 or 21 point lead to have a shot .it was a matter of when miami got settled. The trenches got settled in and it was game over. The difference was crazy.

Duke did a lot better than I expected in the 1st half .so that's a positive to build off of.
