FB: #5 Miami 53, Duke 31 Postgame Thread

From one angle, we’re 20 point underdogs to a #5 team that has a bunch of future pros. Yikes.

But how good are they? This season, Miami beat Cal, Louisville, and Virginia Tech by a total of 12 points. Ie, against teams that are comparable to Duke, they’ve barely won.

Last year, with similar high-level talent and the same coach, they lost to NC State, UNC, Louisville, and Georgia Tech (yuk, yuk) and barely beat UVa.

Our coach is extra motivated, not only by his own history, but by the possibility of showing Florida players that Duke could be a solid destination.

This could be a blow out, but if I were a betting man, I’d look at our defense and say give me those 20 points.
Like I said, I like our chances. Duke has nothing to lose.

I like our chances, too. I'd love to see Manny get a win against them. But not as much as he does, I'll bet!

Keeping Ward from running wild is the key, I think. Do that reasonably well and we can win it.

Go Duke!

Some ugly things on Miami football social media. Not sure why they would say such ugly crap about Manny. He was fired and they hired their “dream” coach. Miami’s coach subtly complained about Manny leaving the cupboard bare. Yet several of their starters are holdovers. At the time I thought Manny got a raw deal.

This is a great chance for Duke’s players to show Manny the love. While not optimistic last week, feeling better about this week. We have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Miami has all the pressure. If you haven’t watched, great video of Harding and Diaz discussing offense in the general Duke football thread. To all the Malik haters, he makes some of the best throws seen from a Duke quarterback in a few years. He still hasn’t played a full season but is improving each week.

from your computer to God's ears
but I am not as optimistic

This will be tough

I'm not too worried. They're really good and we may be a wounded team after last week. I assume we'll get killed, but hopefully we'll make them work for it.

All those close games may mean they are due for a reversal in fortune and ready to be beaten. I'm not overly impressed with Cristobal as a coach and if Duke gets off to a good start, Miami may not be able to make the defensive adjustments necessary to make a comeback.

At least that's what I'm hoping.

They have most of the advantages, but it WAS very nice of the Yewww to give Manny and Duke some unbelieveably great bulletin board stuff!

I fear they have a bit too much offense and we have a bit too little, but we'll see. Always hopeful.
I think that Diaz’s defense is going to put on a show for their coach. I do worry about our offense (and the impact on the D if they are on the field too much).

Love this look
I’m meh on the look but for a game in Florida at noon on a Saturday I’m thankful for the lighter colors. Who knows how much difference it really makes it just makes a difference inside my head and If I can calm down some the voices in that freak show … well that’s generally a good thing.

The basic principles of winning football apply: win time of possession, establish the running game, + turnover differential, no special team mistakes. Duke does pretty well in most of those categories. Duke ranks, second or maybe it’s third in the nation in turnover differential. Until last week #1 in TFLs. Too many three and outs particularly in the first half but they have demonstrated they can mount 10+ play time consuming drives. One of the most important things to remember against a scrambling athletic quarterback.is to remain in your rushing lanes. Duke hasn’t given up very many deep passes. Its secondary is pretty good and creates the opportunity for coverage sacks. Therefore, if Duke can stay in their rushing lanes, maintain defensive formations I think they can contain ward pretty well. Get a little bit lucky with some deep balls to Jordan Moore and Pancol who have won their fair share of 50-50 balls this year atypical of receivers of the past I think Duke can pull out of victory. I expect this thing to be close in the fourth quarter and I don’t necessarily expect to win, but I will not be surprised if Duke does win.
