DWBB: Summer of 2025

Grad transfer out of Pepperdine. Another pick up that seems to be a roster filler.

Another great find, @Bluedvlfan1. Hailey Johnson is a 5-11 guard, and has become Duke WBB's lone representative from California, with Jenessa Cotton now at Kansas State and Vanessa de Jesus now at Notre Dame.

WBB Blog says that Hailey Johnson is a grad transfer, but I didn't see anything obvious out there, like a graduation program or photo. She should have two years of eligibility. Between her Pepperdine bio and Sports Reference stats, she redshirted the 2022-23 season and played in 2023-24 and 2024-25.

In 31 games over those 2 seasons, she has 2 starts, and a career total of 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 9 assists. Almost a triple-double.

There's not a lot of video out there. In November 2023, Hailey Johnson and interim head coach Kelsey Keizer previewed the 2023-24 season that had just started.

Pepperdine had a win-loss record of 5-25 (1-15 WCC) in the 2023-24 season, 9th out of 9 teams in their conference, and Coach Keizer moved on to an assistant coaching job at Cal Baptist. Last season, under new coach Katie Faulkner, they went 8-22 (3-17 WCC) and finished 10th out of 11 teams. (Remember, the West Coast Conference took in the Pac-2 of Oregon State and Washington State.)

Earlier today, Duke WBB posted that Reigan Richardson was invited by USA Basketball to the 2025 Women's Americup Team Trials.

reiganrichardsonusab.jpg

The players include Raegan Beers, Mikayla Blakes, Madison Booker, Mara Braun, Addyson Brown, Jaloni Cambridge, Audi Crooks, Margaret Doogan, Joyce Edwards, Stailee Heard, Hannah Hidalgo, Flau’jae Johnson, Gianna Kneepkens, Darianna Littlepage-Buggs, Olivia Miles, Khamil Pierre, Reigan Richardson, Kennedy Smith, Hannah Stuelke, Grace VanSlooten and Payton Verhulst...

Making their USA Basketball debuts are Doogan, Heard, Kneepkens, Littlepage-Buggs, Pierre, Richardson and Stuelke.

As previously announced, Kara Lawson (Duke University) will serve as head coach with assistant coaches DeLisha Milton-Jones (Old Dominion University) and Jennie Baranczyk (University of Oklahoma). They will be assisted by court coaches Jim Flanery (Creighton University) and Robyn Fralick (Michigan State University) at trials.

It's a little weird that the Boneyard Forum -- Connecticut's message board -- has a Duke WBB thread with more information about the 2025-26 schedule than we have here.

Here's what we know so far. Click the opponent or event for more information.

Non-Conference Opponents

11/12 Norfolk State Spartans (home)
-- start of a home-and-home series; Duke will play in Norfolk in 2026-27

Duke's visit to Norfolk will mark a historic milestone, becoming the first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent to compete at Echols Hall in program history. The Blue Devils finished last season with a 29-8 record, making an appearance in the Elite Eight, earning the No. 7 national ranking.

"I appreciate Coach Kara Lawson's willingness to engage in a home-and-home series with our institution," [head coach Jermaine] Woods said. "As we continue to strive for greater visibility for HBCU's, collaborative agreements like this are instrumental in driving progress. Her return to Norfolk will yield numerous benefits to our university, community, and the city."

11/16 Liberty Flames (road)
-- leave it to Coach Lawson to invent the road-and-road series

Duke will play in Lynchburg for the second year in a row on Nov. 16, marking the Lady Flames' third home game within the season's first 13 days... Liberty battled the Blue Devils during an 83-67 setback a year ago, a contest which attracted a Liberty Arena women's basketball-record 2,845 fans.

11/20 South Florida Bulls (road)
-- confirmed as a return trip to Tampa

Last season, USF's nonconference schedule was highlighted by a 65-56 win over No. 9/10-ranked Duke on Dec. 21 in Yuengling Center. That victory marked the 22nd-ranked win in program history, head coach Jose Fernandez's 20th-ranked win, and the program's 30th win against a Power-5 opponent.

11/?? Players Era Festival -- Texas, UCLA, and South Carolina (neutral)
-- three days during Thanksgiving Week TBD, round robin format

The Women's Championship will take place at the MGM in Las Vegas over three days during Thanksgiving Week and coincide with next year's Players Era Men's Championship. The round robin format ensures three marquee matchups for each team, with an overall champion determined by head-to-head record, then a series of tiebreakers including point differential, points scored and points allowed.

Notes:

-- Maryland rematch (home) will be in 2026-27, as announced last year. If Oluchi Okananwa stays with the Terrapins, that would be her return to Cameron.

-- To my knowledge, no rematches have been announced -- yet -- with Radford, Dayton, South Dakota State, Belmont, Kansas State, Oklahoma, DePaul, Columbia, or Wofford. Remember, Jenessa Cotton transferred to Kansas State.

-- One of the things I liked about playing in Tampa last season is that it was also preparation for the Final Four that was later held there. Going back this season doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The 2026 Final Four is in Phoenix, and now that Winston Gandy is the head coach at Grand Canyon, you'd think that Coach Lawson might plan something similar.

ACC Opponents

No scheduled games yet. The conference announced the matchups way back in February 2024. It's the opposite of last season, with home opponents in 2024-25 becoming road opponents in 2025-26, and vice versa.

Home: UNC, SMU, Florida State, Georgia Tech, NC State, Wake Forest, Virginia, Notre Dame, Boston College

Away: UNC, California, Stanford, Pittsburgh, Miami, Clemson, Virginia Tech, Louisville, Syracuse

It'll be sparkly on the sidelines!

Duke should move the band behind the visitors bench, so we can see them next to Kim Mulkey's outfit, and determine once and for all which one is louder.

I checked GoDuke for any updates, and there are a few. There are stories about the LSU game and the signings of Hailey Johnson and Anna Wikstrøm.

The Blue Devils and Tigers will match up for the sixth time all-time with the inter-conference contest marking the first in over a decade. Duke has won two straight against LSU and holds a one-game edge in the series, 3-2, which includes a 60-52 NCAA Tournament Second Round victory by the Blue Devils on March 22, 2010.

Johnson:
  • Earned her bachelor's degree in communication studies from Pepperdine in three years
Wikstrøm:
  • Averaged 16.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game during 2024-25 season while leading Ulriken to an 18-2 record and third straight title
There's also a 2025-26 roster. No pictures for the newcomers yet, but there are jersey numbers. Emilee Skinner wears #5, Anna Wikstrøm wears #25, and Hailey Johnson wears #42.

Rumor has it that Mulkey will be stopping by Chapel Hill on the way to Durham to get some sartorial guidance from Sylvia...and perhaps for old times sake borrowing one of her classic outfits

It's weird how a team with 4 openings on the 2025-2026 roster *seems* to be devoting all of its recruiting attention on the 2026-2027 season. Dushawn London of 247 reports that 5-star Jacy Abii will visit Durham in the fall. (His link is to a paywall article.)

Jacy Abii is a 6-3 forward from the state of Texas. Her 2026 class ranking, according to various services...

247: #18
247 Composite: #11
ESPN: #9
On3: #7
On3 Industry: #7

I mean, we did just have a Duke WBB freshman who, like Cooper Flagg, led Duke in scoring, won ACC Rookie of the Year, and made the All-ACC First Team.
I saw we got two players though their impact remains to be seen. So how is our roster looking? Still short on players, esp. Compared to what we lost?

We lost two players of impact, Oluchi and Vanessa, but most teams would be jealous over the experience that Kara is keeping going into next year.
Add to that we have two players that have been with the team all of last year that were unable to play. We'll be fine.

Olivia Martin actually has one more year of eligibility. Her freshman year she was a manager, so if she plans to stay for graduate school, she could still be on the roster.

Some 2026 recruiting updates from On3's Talia Goodman.

Jacy Abii includes Duke among her Top 10. The others are Connecticut, LSU, Notre Dame, South Carolina, TCU, Tennessee, Texas, UCLA, and UNC.

I previously wrote about Abii, with class rankings and video, in post #214. She's a 6-3 forward from the state of Texas. Dushawn London said that she would make an official visit to Duke in the fall, and Goodman mentions something similar, but if there's a date scheduled, it's behind a paywall.

Chamiah Francis has a Top 9: Alabama, Duke, Florida State, Louisville, LSU, Miami, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, and UNC.

Back in post #221, I wrote about Francis, again with class rankings and video. She's a 6-3 center from the state of Florida, visiting Duke on September 19. Interestingly, she was going to visit Notre Dame first, on August 31, but now that seems awkward.

Finally, Amari Byles will visit Duke on September 12 -- no home football game that weekend, they're at Tulane -- and has 5 other school visits scheduled.

Byles is also from the Lone Star State. Goodman labels her as a combo guard above, but the recruiting services below say she's a 6-2 forward. Class rankings:

247: #22
247 Composite: #18
ESPN: #22
On3: #19
On3 Industry: #22

There's a YouTube account in her name, with a set of highlights from a Chipotle Nationals semifinal game she played against Montverde Academy in April. She's in yellow jersey #24.

SportsCenter Next has a longer version of highlights from the same game.

Only been able to find posts about this in French. Duke vs Baylor in Paris to kick off the season.

Another great find. Here are the See Tickets and Adidas Arena pages for the event. For those more adventurous, tickets go on sale tomorrow, and it looks like you can use either site to make your purchase.

For the rest of us, keep in mind the time difference. Last year's event was broadcast live on ESPN2 with the following local start times.

Ole Miss vs. USC: 11am CT, 9am PT
Louisville vs UCLA: 2:30pm ET, 11:30am PT

FYI, the Adidas Arena site says that Duke-Baylor will be the first game in this year's doubleheader.

Adidas Arena was an Olympic venue last year for badminton and rhythmic gymnastics. It holds 8,000 for sports and 9,000 for concerts. (According to the event calendar, Mumford & Sons perform there the following week.)

In the absence of an overseas team trip in the summer, this will have to do.
