Duke Women's Soccer 2024

Halftime stats
Shots: 13-8 Duke
SOG: 5-4 Duke
Corners: 4-1 Duke

Dominating the stat sheet but some seriously bad marking led to goals

That foul call on Mary Long was exquisitely awful. If the College Cup brings out the best officials that's a major yikes for college soccer.
Probably the most biased reffing I can remember, and I watch a lot of soccer. We didn’t get a single foul call for the first 25 minutes, and every time two players go for a 50/50 ball, we get called. I suspect total fouls are probably something like 20 against Duke to maybe 4 against Carolina.

It’s not the reffing. It’s unc played harder, faster n more physical then we did tonight. Team started very flat n dug a whole they were never able to climb out of.

Totally agree that we’re losing this game 3-0 whether or not the refs is biased, and UNC is outplaying us.

But none of that changes the fact that the game is not being called anywhere near fairly. That has to be disheartening to the players.

The first defensive lapse was the game. Dahlien made a good move but Duke had 3 defenders near her. There was no reason for Chico to try to poke at the ball. 1-0 to UNC, given the history might as well have been 5-0. No way Duke was coming back against Carolina.

The penalty that early was a blow they never recovered from. UNC for the last 3 games has attacked Chico. It is what it is. Nicky has had a very good season. Thomas and Dahlein’s speed were too much for her tonight

Great season…bad game tonight
It just was not our night

Wish the team well but it’s over until next season. Good luck to Kieran Hall and Carla Overbeck. They got some really good grad transfers. Need that to happen again. Haase and Bebar were great additions

Number 1 rated recruiting class coming in

We will get Martinho, Rader, Walters and presumably Piper back from injury

Going to need a keeper to step up
Lose a lot of defensive experience: Freeman, Groff, Chico and Bebar all depart

Graham too

But there is a very strong offensive core coming back

Disappointing end to what was a really enjoyable season. UNC has leveled up from their play earlier in the season, unfortunately it seems inevitable that they will take home the title. I only caught the second half (scored a last minute ticket and braved the freezing cold) but they matched our speed on the wings which was our strength all season and we never mounted a serious threat other than ambitious crosses into the box that didn't really have a chance.

This season really has been the soccer equivalent of 2022 men's basketball, right down to the heartbreaking final four loss to the CHeats. Hopefully Wake can pull some magic on Monday to take away some of the sting.
