Duke Women's Soccer 2024

It's a bit early to be thinking about, but it is worth noting that the Duke Women's Soccer team announced it's full 2024 schedule today.

It might be a bit hard to read in image form, so here's the link to it on goduke.com. Nice to see us continue the tradition of a home-and-home with that school down the road, once toward the end of the non-conference season, and once as part of the official conference schedule. We are at Stanford and Cal in mid-October.

I noticed the schedule today as well. I live in Pittsburgh and have enjoyed the chance to catch lots of Duke teams playing games at Pitt.

Unfortunately the latest conference realignment seems to be putting an end to that. While Duke women’s soccer will play UNC twice in 2024 they have zero games against Pitt.

Football versus Pitt in 2024 moves from an annual game to once every 4 years or so. I suspect it will be the same for men’s soccer, volleyballl, baseball and basketball.

“Conference” play becomes meaningless….now get off of my lawn!

In case you didn't read the goduke article showing the WSOC schedule, there was a short preview of the team:

"Coming off a season where the Blue Devils struggled with a 6-7-3 record, Church expects to return 10-of-11 starters and has added four very impressive transfers to the mix with the addition of All-American Hannah Bebar (Harvard), Farrah Walters (Santa Clara), Mia Oliaro (North Carolina) and Ella Hase (Northwestern)."

"The four incoming transfers have combined to play in 141 matches with 132 starts, scored 48 goals, added 42 assists and notched 138 points over their careers."

"Church also added one of the top incoming freshman classes with the addition of Caroline Dysart, Lauren Martinho, Mary Long and Sophia Recupero."

I really wish that the ACC had explained the conference scheduling process before our schedule release, because I have no idea what reasonable scheduling would look like in a 17 team situation.

I never liked scheduling UNC as a non-conference opponent after Dorrance's emails about academics at Duke and Stanford, but understood it in years where we did not play them in-conference, but pretty much anything would have been better than scheduling them if they are already part of the conference slate.

I just learned that Martinho tore her ACL during National Team training camp and will miss the U20 World Cup. She is out for the year and will redshirt

Duke had its opening exhibition game tonight: 9-0 victory over Furman. Nine different players scored. We were lucky last year if we scored 2 goals against average competition. Furman is not the proverbial Little Sisters of the Poor. They tied UGA last season 1-1 in an exhibition and lost 2-0 to South Carolina. They allowed 2 goals or less in their last 14 games last year.

As an interesting side note, it appears that Kiera Clemens, a top 25 recruit from last year who played, has stepped away from the team but remains a student at Duke.

Here is a bonkers stat for the crowd at home

  • At the half, Duke held a 21-0 advantage in shots.
  • For the match, the Blue Devils held a 39-5 lead in shots.

As I noted last season, last year was the lowest scoring output in Duke team history. We scored 15 total goals. Our previous season low had been 22. So this is really encouraging.

United Soccer Coaches preseason rankings are out
1. FSU
2. Stanford
5. Clemson
7. Pitt
8. UNC
15. Notre Dame
24. Duke

Kat Rader is pre-season All ACC

Other members of the preseason All-ACC team includes Teagan Wy (California), Jordynn Dudley (Florida State), Heather Gilcrest (Florida State), Taylor Huff (Florida State), Leah Klenke (Notre Dame), Deborah Abiodun (Pitt), Srah Schupansky (Pitt), Jasmine Aikey (Stanford), Elise Evans (Stanford), Maggie Cagle (Virginia) and Lia Godfrey (Virginia).

Duke was also preseason voted No. 7 in the coaches' poll. Florida State, Stanford, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Clemson, Virginia, Duke, Pitt, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, California, NC State, Louisville, Boston College, SMU, Miami and Syracuse rounded out the preseason poll.

Nicky Chico, Maggie Graham and Kelly Wilson were named as captains.

Going to be a stern opening set of games at Ohio State and at #6 Nebraska. I do think the kids we picked up in the portal will give Duke some toughness and physicality we have been lacking in previous seasons.
