Duke Men's Lax 2025

Yea, I agree with both of you that that is one rule I would like to see changed. I'm no lacrosse expert but I think, if a team scores a goal, give the ball to the opposing team and let them start their offense. If one team has a great face-off man, they can dominate the game. The other rule I would change is when the ball goes out of bounds in the end zone (or whatever the ends of the field are called). Now, the team with a player closest to the end zone when the ball goes out of bounds gets the ball, even if their own players are responsible for the ball going out of bounds. Like most other sports, and again, I would give the ball to the opposing team of the team that was responsible for the ball going out of bounds.
In the old peach basket years, bball had a center tip after each made basket. Seems like lacrosse could move away from this model.

So should I start teaching my 11 year old son to be a FOGO or not? Seems like a great way to get into college!

I love the addition of a shot clock but would also cut it down - 80 seconds is an eternity. 60 or less would be fine.

I believe this is only if it's considered a shot. If a pass goes out of bounds on the baseline/end zone, it's a turnover.

The closest to the ball rule applies only if it was a shot that went out of bounds. If a player just loses the ball or passed out of bounds it hoes to the other team.

Admittedly, I'm a dinosaur. Given that ... it is just not a good look to me to see so much virtual ink being used in a discussion of who should replace a coach who has kept a program running at a high level for years and who, to my knowledge, has made no statement at all indicating he was looking to leave.
I see your point, although I think I remember a fair amount of idle speculation on this board about who might succeed Coach K when he decided to retire. It’s a natural thing to consider with an older, long-time coach, and I don’t think it should be read to mean that people are encouraging Coach Danowski to leave.

IMHO the closest to the ball on a shot should definitely stay as well as Faceoffs.

The closest to the ball rule encourages shots and scoring. Without it and with a simple out of bounds on a missed shot, the overwhelming majority of shots would not be taken and the pace of play would slow dramatically. I think many people would consider the game boring with fewer shots being taken and scoring subsequently being lower. It is also a throw back to the origins of lacrosse when the game didn’t have boundaries.

The presence of the faceoff means teams are theoretically in games much longer than they would be in its’ absence and places more emphasis/importance on possession. The shot clock does s good job of mitigating this. I don’t think the faceoff should disappear but proposals to limit the importance of a FOGO are worth debating. The PLL has a shortened shot clock following a faceoff win and Quint Kessenich has a good proposal to make the “real field players” rotate through the faceoffs that would eliminate the influence of a specialist like a FOGO.

Thank you for that explanation and reasoning!

Keep the faceoff! Our first National Championship in lacrosse. 2010.

Amen! We were there—it was broiling hot and the game had been tense and very low scoring. We had just accepted that we would have to sit through a long overtime, when bam! It was over! Thrilling!

My favorite part was reading later that Justin Turri was shouting “hold up! Wait!” But thank God Costabile was not listening.

Fortunately we didn’t need to find out but it looks like we would have had the backup if CJ missed the shot, if the rules were different I would guess a lot more Blue Devils would have been yelling at him to hold up! 🤣

It's easy to forget that Duke won a natty in 2013 because Brendan Fowler dominated at X. He was so good they changed the rules, but that's an annual thing.

If you are going to compromise, you could have faceoffs to start every quarter and as part of a penalty. (Ex. A faceoff after a goal during a man-up/down situation.) This isn't like moving the DH to the NL. I don't think you are going to sell it to the coaches and career players.

I like faceoffs. They are part of what makes lacrosse unique. Lacrosse is more prone to big swings in scoring and I think that makes the game more fun. For one thing, if lax adopted basketball rules after scoring, we'd see way fewer comebacks. Teams would just milk the clock with the lead in the 4th quarter. It would become a math problem. If the shot clock is 80 seconds, you can multiply that by the number of goals you're ahead by. So a 3 goal lead means you can hold the ball for 4 minutes, and the game is effectively over unless you commit a turnover (really it would be over before the 4 minute mark, because the other team scoring will run some clock as well). Lacrosse is fundamentally different from other sports in that it is extremely difficult to create a turnover when the offensive team simply wants to hold the ball. I think of the face off as sort of a way to balance that out.

I also don't love the suggestion made by Quint Kessenich, which is to require all players to take faceoffs. Facing off is a legitimate skill and and important part of the game. His suggestion would just make face offs way more random. I'm not sure what problem that solves.

If you want to reduce the shot clock, fine. If you want to tweak the rules about the legal face off techniques, go ahead I guess. But I'm not convinced that FOGOs have too big an impact on the game. It's worth noting that in all of D-I, only 13 players had a face off percentage of 60% or better. Many of the top FO guys by win percentage played on teams that weren't particularly good. https://www.ncaa.com/stats/lacrosse-men/d1/current/individual/410

Dyson Williams named NLL Rookie of the Year, Brennan O’Neill joined him on the All Rookie team.

The NLL announcement is incorrect, he was the 1st pick of the 2023 draft not the 2nd pick of the 2024 draft.

“Albany FireWolves’ Dyson Williams has been named Rookie of the Year. The former Duke standout made an immediate impact, showcasing his elite scoring touch and lacrosse IQ as a key piece of Albany’s attack. Williams was selected second overall in the 2024 NLL Draft and lived up to the hype with a stellar first season.“

I am OK with this discussion in a respectful manner in the off-season. I don't like in-season discussions getting distracted by it (though I am likely guilty of doing this). It is a reasonable thing to discuss and I'm sure smart recruits are asking the same questions - if you are a HS sophomore who will commit in September (I believe a lot of lax recruits formally commit in September of junior year), there is a very significant chance Danowski will not be head coach your senior year of college. Obviously there are no guarantees that any coach will still be around in six years for countless reasons, but it is particularly relevant here.

I'm sure Nina King is on top of this. And she and Duke have zero obligation to disclose anything to us.
Yes, and his current contract ( at least what was known publically) ended last year. Very few things would make me happier to see Coach go out on top. There are some things that need addressed. Offense, fogo play, and clearing come to mind. We’ve got a fantastic goalie and close defense and good middie play to build upon.
