Duke Men’s Soccer 2024

Bjornsson left the game in the first half yesterday with a knee injury. He could not put any weight on the leg. I sure hope it is not a serious injury like Rader and Roberson.
NR Duke vs #11 uNC at Koskinen starting.

Bjornsson is not on the field to start. The announcer said that he did warm up and could possibly play today. Good news!

Absolutely horrific no call by the ref missing the obvious hand ball on the 2nd UNC goal…embarrassing

Can’t even use the available VAR to review hand ball situations

The Burns red card was a no brainer. Studs up and late. Hot should have got one as well for the push in the back in the box on the breakaway. UNC had 2 SOG for the entire game and buried both.

What an odd game, both in terms of Duke’s play as well as the imbalanced officiating. Our players seem to react slowly, with childlike reaction time. It was just very strange to watch.

React slowly??? To what exactly??
Usually I saw hesitation when a Duke player was receiving a pass and deciding what to do next (pass, dribble, or even shoot). (No, this isn’t a post about Mark Mitchell).

In many cases, by the time they decided, a UNC player was either applying pressure or cutting the passing lanes. I’m no soccer expert, but I could see these plays falling apart before they were happening. I didn’t see the same hesitation from the UNC men.

Just what I saw. I’m probably wrong…I usually am.

You are clearly biased…as an example you rip Church but constantly give Kerr a pass. You never critique his coaching or recruiting. Tonight it was the refs, UNC only had 2 shots. He is now 3-14-3 against UNC. Is it always bad luck or bad refs?

He has missed the ncaa tournament 7x in 16 years, including 5 years in a row. He has zero ACC titles, 1 elite 8 in 16 years. And has 7 winning records in ACC play over those 16 years. Those are facts. And in the 4 years prior to Kerr taking over Duke appeared in NCAA tourney all 4 years, Final 4 1 year, and won an ACC title. 16 years later and still looking for both. Perhaps there is no other coach in the country who could do better given whatever challenges Duke faces (maybe admissions, maybe funding I don’t know).

As for the comparison to Cut, that would have been 2012-2016. How he survived that 5 year skid is unclear to me.

I rip Church? I give him a lot of credit for attacking the portal and changing his formation. His recruiting has been outstanding. He had a poor year last year. It happens…I disagreed with some of his personnel decisions last year.

As for Kerr’s recruiting, it has been very good. The difference is that men’s soccer is a total crapshoot with near parity among 30 teams every year and those teams change regularly. In this day and age, it might be the most open and competitive NCAA sport. There is very little that separates #1 from #30.

The last 3 seasons have been strong. A terrible no call separated the teams this evening. He’s going nowhere, nor should he.
