Duke Football 2024

It's probably best to presume that the head coach is a short term position. For Cut to be here for 14 years was a rare thing. I really like Manny and hope he stays. Perhaps, given he's already had a chance at his dream job, that he'll be more inclined to enjoy job security at a place where he's valued. But I'm not going to count on it.

Wish I could share your optimism. If he runs the table and gets 10 wins, he becomes a hot commodity. A 5+ million offer at a school with a football fanbase and I think he leaves. Hope is with more integrity than the last one.

We lose to WF and then no issues.
At some point, it may sense for Duke to pony up and pay bigger $$$ to a good coach who will stick around. If we continue to be increasingly competitive, start commanding better attendance, and many of the other benefits of being a good team, the increase in revenue could more than offset the extra salary. If we are interested in not being left behind as conferences continue to align, we need to continue invest in competitive continuity.

Otherwise, penny-wise and pound-foolish.

With that said, I’ve not interrogated the data required to reject (or fail to reject) this meandering, perhaps incoherent hypothesis I describe above.

Manny is a Florida State alumnus. Florida State is 2-9 and a 16.5 dog to unranked Florida at home Saturday. Color me and DukeMom02 worried. Best case is Manny will use the Florida State and/or other offers to wrangle additional $$$ from Nina.
FSU was awwwful this year, but they aren't firing Norvell. It won't happen just a year removed from having his team as ACC Champs and getting robbed of being in the playoffs. He got rid of all his play-callers, the folks in Tallahassee will give him another year to prove that this season was a fluke.
And truth be known, it likely was.

In this day and age of sincerity/commitment being fleeting at best, I just this gut feeling Manny wants to be here to build the program rather than build the resume.
I sure hope you're right. Manny has never been in the same job for more than three years in his coaching career. The longest he's been at any one school is five years, but that was with internal promotions. His track record suggests that if the big time comes calling, Manny will answer. But I certainly hope that Duke is different.

It’s a paradox. The more he wins, the more other programs poach, increasing the risk of a departure. And the more he wins, the more he has created the ideal landing spot for a terrific career, increasing the chance that he stays.

I think Nina has it covered, and I think Manny is probably making more money than you think he is. Nina is WAY ahead of you on the conference alignment thingy, which is why she is pouring money into football (and she is). It has to be her biggest concern, and she's doing a great job preparing us for whatever lies ahead.

Well he's only been HC twice, and would have been at Miami longer if they hadn't been set on greener pastures. Most coaches with his record wouldn't have been fired.

Also, I think Elko had a decent sized buyout which helped to fund Manny's salary (I just googled and saw $5 million). And I don't think we had to pay Cutcliffe much to leave. Both factors have probably helped the budget a lot.

I would have been quite pleased with 6 wins. 9 regular season wins is truly remarkable.

Now, some of this may be a little smoke and mirrors. We're 6-1 in close games and we have benefitted from some good fortune in the turnover department. I don't say that to diminish anything this team accomplished. We have warriors on our team that have taken opponents into the sewer in the 4th quarter again and again. They are amazing and should be celebrated. But from a fan's perspective, we shouldn't expect to win so many close ones next year.

Hopefully, we won't have to. This was supposed to be a "down" year roster-wise. Give our OL some time to improve, give Maalik a full offseason, and I think we can be better next year.

Any thoughts on where Duke will be bowling?
Discussion here:

I look forward to some updated thoughts after the smoke clears today.

I'll cop to a degree of luck. But Duke gets full credit for the turnover margins.

I think TO margin is generally regarded as a bit of a fluky stat (high degree of luck/regression to the mean). But, what stands out to me as perhaps more impressive about Duke this season are that Duke was #2 in the country in sacks, #6 in tackles for loss and #9 in third down percentage defense. After watching 30 years of Duke being unable to get off the field, it’s been amazing to see what Diaz has done with the D this year.

Also saw something to the effect that Duke was tied for the most wins in the country after trailing in the 4th Quarter (4 or maybe 5 after today), which speaks to the team’s mental toughness and resilience.

Other than the calamitous inability to cash in TOs against SMU, it’s been an incredible season and far beyond what I had expected/hoped for after all of the personnel losses from last year.
