That's a Caldbeck. Forget which one. I saw him at the Final Four and have seen him in pictures of other Duke events. I forget which one - one of them had some legal issues.
His mama named him Jason, imma call him Jason.AFAIK, they only "Jay"s that played for Duke were Bilas, Bryan, Heaps and Buckley. On Duke's 2001-02 roster, he's "Jason Williams". He only changed it to Jay when Jayson Williams killed a man with a shotgun. I'm sure his mother still calls him "Jason". He will always be Jason to me.
Scheyer coaching up a storm, at least in the edited clips. Not happy with the team at the start, and also said he shouldn't see anyone making the same mistake twice. At the end of the practice, he was nice about it, telling the team that it's only Day 1.
These were some of the things that stood out to me as well. Jon was really getting on Slim in particular, I thought. Not bad but just coaching him hard.Scheyer coaching up a storm, at least in the edited clips. Quite a few Dame highlights.
Looks like Coach Bradds had his own knee procedure, as he's limping a bit and wearing a big brace on his right leg.
And Jon also got on him later for not hitting Pat when Pat had his man sealed on the block. The other highlight to me - insert caveat about it being a single play in a highlight reel - is a play that Caleb made at 8:44 in the video. He gets past his man and into the paint; then as soon as the help defender slides over he decisively kicks the ball out to an open shooter. It's a small thing but it was nice to see him driving to pass and doing so successfully.
In the Wednesday press conference, Jon talked a bit about roster construction in the modern age. He basically said that the plan is not to always be so freshman heavy, but he's not going to shy away from the most talented kids, but that he'd like to be older, and I think the player development angle partially an advertisement for staying around for a few years. If we can pay them competitively, and develop them as well or better than anyone else, and also have the Duke brand and the Brotherhood/alumni network to sell, hopefully we keep retaining guys. Not to jump ahead. But looking at Mock drafts and such we could return these players next year.
Foster
Boozer
Harris
Wilkins
Khamenia
Pat
They do seem to be recruiting with this plan in mind as well. And, based on what we're hearing about the 2026 class, it seems like this is a good strategy (prioritizing roster retention, I mean). In the Wednesday press conference, Jon talked a bit about roster construction in the modern age. In this modern age, one consequence of retention seems to be the delay in high school commitments. I know some of that is being caused by the "Class of 2025 Bubble" for lack of a better term, where this year's freshman class got huge payments which may not be repeated, which in turn is leading the current class to hold out for similar money, even though it feels like that money won't be there because of the new house settlement rules and Deloitte being involved, etc. But, a great player is going to want to step into a situation where they are not only getting big money, but also a prominent role, dare I say a promised prominent role. I know that wasn't the only factor in the Nate Ament recruitment, but it was a factor. Interesting times. Glad we have Jon and Rachel Baker guiding the roster building ship. Rachel gets a shout out at the tail end of Jon's press conference. It is clear she is a major difference maker for the program. They do seem to be recruiting with this plan in mind as well. Is that David Henderson? One of my favorites.
He can maybe text, but I don't think he's going to be on the bench and able to provide running commentary like he did at CTC. I think the NCAA still limits the number of coaches permitted during the games, so unless they kick someone else to the curb, Tatum won't be sitting on the banch at all, will he? Unless the rules have changed.Interesting watching the "brief" exchanges between Scheyer and Tatum during the blue-white game.... Tatum will be able to provide commentary to Scheyer of what he sees. What a prize.
