Duke Blue Planet - 2024-25 Season

one question i have for the board, as it relates to what the players experience amongst themselves vs. official NBA "lineage keeping": a player like Jeremy Roach, who spent 4 years at Duke, earned a degree (?), and then is finishing at Baylor, or AOC or Joey Baker who spent multiple years at Duke before finishing elsewhere, are they considered part of the Brotherhood?
Today, I would say yes for Jeremy and Joey and no for AOC. Tomorrow, I might give you a different answer for AOC.

I think I’ve said this before, but I pay attention to the guys who show up to stuff like this weekend or K Academy. In the case of Roach and Joey at least, I believe they’ve both come back for K Academy after leaving Duke. So I would say that they’re treated as part of the Brotherhood.

I don't know if there's an actual membership process or who would control that. But if attendance at K Academy signifies acknowledged membership in the Brotherhood, their website lists Mark Mitchell, Joey Baker, Jaden Schutt, and Jeremy Roach. And if fan sentiment counts, then Roach is a shoo-in. I think with the changes in hoops, especially the portal, the definition of Brotherhood will evolve like everything else. No one would argue with Ryan Kelly's or Theo John's memberships. AOC works for me. About the only one I struggle with some is Jalen Johnson. But at least he adds another Dukie to the NBA.

Did you mean Ryan Young?

Or is this some backhanded way to reinvigorate the discussion of whether K should have burned Ryan Kelly's freshman year redshirt? ;)

I believe Joey has been back for K Academy. And I expect Jeremy will be welcomed back with open arms.

Duke absolutely considers Jalen part of the Brotherhood...

And the way his NBA career is progressing we are going to be quite happy to claim him. He's the second best player on the Atlanta Hawks at this point and, at 22 years old and wit the progress he has made the past couple years, I'd say there's a decent chance he becomes an All-Star someday.

I am guessing all of those you mentioned will be welcome back, but to clarify, current players work at K Academy (they always have but now I think they also get some NIL money) so I'm guessing that Mitchell, Schutt and Roach are listed as having been there while they were current Duke students, not necessarily this past summer after they had left. K Academy is around Memorial Day so it is a great way to welcome new players into the Brotherhood by introducing them to the older guys who come back.

I liked Schutt but he is going to be one of those really tough trivia question answers in a few years when we try to remember past players. I can name almost every scholarship player (and a lot of walk-ons) by class year from the 80s through the early 2000s. Now it is such a revolving door (plus my older brain doesn't work as well).

I know Dereck is going to have a long, successful NBA career... but is it too early to wish-cast him as our future big man coach? The way he's explaining concepts to Khaman was masterful, even more so considering his own youth!

After watching Dereck with Khaman, I literally went to look up exactly how old Dereck was (even though I knew), because it sure as heck seemed liked a grizzled veteran explaining the tricks of the trade to an enthusiastic rookie. But - and I want emphasize this - Dereck Lively in 20 years old. And has played one year in the NBA after one year at Duke.

It was just an amazing watch.

There's no bigger Dereck fan here than me. Seems like an absolutely righteous guy, overcoming the loss of both parents, great work ethic, loyal (comes back to watch Football!!), humble, well-spoken, and destined for have a great NBA career. There is no better proof that an OAD can be a shining representative of Duke basketball and an integral part of the Brotherhood.

And as a Mavericks fan I can tell you the fanbase loves him

That makes him 18% older than Maluach!
It's funny how two years matters so much when you're young. Give 'em another decade or two, and they'll suddenly realize that they are functionally the same age. Except for siblings. Your older brother is older for life.

I don't think this is a Duke Blue Planet video... but at least a Duke Basketball video. Hopefully this is appropriate here.

Jay Bilas addresses the team. He sounds like Coach K 2.0...

This is great.

One specific K 2.0 thing I noticed was the repeating of key phrases. I like it. I may copy it myself at work. “We hold each other accountable. We hold each other accountable.”
