Duke Baseball: Welcome to Duke Coach Corey Muscara

I think you hit the nail on the head. The petty whimpering on the board does not shine favorably on Duke. I thought we were adults who recognized how the real world operates.
Whimpering will increase when he takes the best current players and recruits with him.

One whiny comment does not represent a DBR consensus. But it may seem like it does.

Hey friend, this isn’t law school and I’m not obligated to submit to your socratic-method hypotheticals. (You do seem invested, though; Coach Pollard, is that you? 😂)

Anyway, 12 overnight hours is not when this deal began and ended. So it’s not something I respect.
It isn't law school. Thank god. And I'm not Coach Pollard. I'm just more of a cynic, I guess, and the realities of the business of college sports don't bother me on a specific level too often.

I'm bothered that Pollard (or any coach) is in a position where they have to move as quickly as they do now. But within that incredibly flawed system, I'm not bothered by Pollard moving quickly, and I wouldn't be bothered if Duke got a replacement as quickly.

yes, we're just going to nab someone else's revered coach....

Lessee... UVa talks to Pollard's agent to ascertain interest. UV AD then talks to Nina and asks for permission to contact Pollard. Then, everyone springs into action....

Seems like normal big-time sports to me.

The game that ended Duke’s season concluded at 10:03 PM, and Kendall Rogers broke the news of Pollard’s hiring at 10:33 AM. Sure, Pollard’s agent reached him right after the game and somehow, overnight following a crushing loss, Pollard negotiated and finalized a UVa deal. Feel free to believe that; I find it utterly implausible.

Please bear in mind my point was against the idea that we shouldn’t lose a single ounce of respect for Pollard. What you say here about motivations is definitely true.

Petty whimpering occurs with every fan base everywhere when it's not a welcome change.
I was initially going to whine about Pollard’s departure and the timing of it. I thought back to a few decades ago when, while working in a small, rural ER, for a department head I loved and respected, I was quietly working to secure a new gig that was better for me and my family. Hypocrite much?
Best of luck Coach Pollard. I thank you for the ample contributions and rescuing Duke baseball from what Duke football was. Your chapter is closed.

I look forward to Nina King doing what Nina King does best.

I always think it is so weird when people criticize coaches when they leave. Those same people only support the guy if he wins. It's conditional support. But people want blind loyalty in exchange for conditional support.

And if my dream job gets offered to me tomorrow, I am off like a prom dress. If I win the lottery, I am calling in rich.
Maybe tap the brakes on conflating annoyance at the manner of Pollard’s departure with fair-weather fandom? How do you know that to be true?

Speaking only for myself, I’m annoyed, sure. But I thought Pollard was still the best thing to happen to Duke BB in 60 years when they got swept at Stanford earlier this year, and I continue to think that today.

Disagree. Ask any coach what their priority is and they will say money over facilities.

They want salary to pay players over fancy amenities.
There is very little doubt in my mind that UVA will allocate more of their $20.5mm per year House settlement money to baseball. I struggle to see how this wasn’t a factor (and probably a big one)

I think the ramifications of the House settlement on sports are going to be extreme over the near-to-intermediate term. Every coach on every program is going to their AD and saying “how much do I get to spend?” Without any standardization across conferences on a sport-by-sport level at a minimum (and likely the NCAA nationally), you are going to have massive disparities and changes as schools decide which sports they want to invest more resources in.

FB and MBB will take most of the money, no question. But are schools willing to skimp a bit on either to make a sweet baseball team? Or sweet lacrosse team? Or sweet soccer team?

You’re arguably at a competitive disadvantage having a full athletic department with multiple sports with mouths to feed. Even if you tell a bunch of programs they’re getting bagels, you better be sure some school out there is giving that program some money, and any good coach is going to start chasing those few willing to spend on your sport
