Duke Baseball: Welcome to Duke Coach Corey Muscara

No, it isn't just you. Pollard did not quite copy the playbook of Midnight Mike ... but he came pretty close. It is just more evidence that professionalism takes a distant back seat to other considerations anymore.

So-called college sports is a cesspool now, and those that excel in it almost inevitably have to thrive in a septic field.
There is NOBODY more professional than Chris Pollard. Came close to midnight Mike? No freaking way. There were many moving parts here but let’s just say he was made a lot of promises that were not delivered. This is on Duke, not Chris Pollard. They set this program back big time.

Who are the "they" here?

Why so esoteric?

I don’t claim to be in the know but I’d love to hear what promises were made to Coach Pollard that Duke wasn’t doing?

As with most things, the truth here probably lies in the middle.

You joined DBR last week, apparently to read about/defend Coach Pollard, which is fine. But the way DBR works is that we need more detail from newcomers than some vague comments. Did “they” (I presume the administration) back off of Coombs improvement plans? Fewer scholarships? Did they renege on paving the coaches’ parking lot? (You’re probably too young to know about the last one.)

The coaches' parking lot was never paved? How many spaces? It seems to me you could pave the BB coaches' parking lot from the concession sales at one basketball game.

Who are the "they" here?
The decision makers. I’m not mentioning any names because I don’t know who all was involved. But “they” are the same people who promised him that they’d improve the ACC’s worst facilities after he turned down a huge offer from Miami to stay. Yes, they’ve done a few things but it was supposed to move a lot quicker and this offseason’s plans were cut in half. Who knows what happens now as Pollard was obviously the glue holding this program together.

From the perspective of the decision makers I get it. From the time those promises were made to now a lot has changed in college athletics. Baseball is not a money maker and therefore not a priority. The decision makers are pumping $$$ into the football program because they have to. Because that’s the money maker that will help support all the other sports, etc..If it wasn’t for the extreme generosity of the Koch family I doubt the field level stuff would have already been renovated.

As Duke fans we are extremely, extremely lucky to have very smart people making these decisions, so I’m not to attacking them. I’m only here to speak the truth and to defend the best coach in Duke baseball history, who also happens to be one hell of a human being. I could go on and on here but I’ll spare you guys. All I’m saying is before you trash the guy you should know the circumstances of why he left Duke.

I’d be willing to bet that any of you guys trashing Pollard would do the exact same thing. If your current employer made promises to you and didn’t keep them, leaving you in a position that made you job A LOT harder, then another employer (from basically where you grew up) comes along and offers you a raise and infinite resources to make your job easier you’d all take it.
