Duke Baseball: Welcome to Duke Coach Corey Muscara

If true, that was FAST! Damn. Obviously, he must have been talking to UVa for some time and was just waiting for Duke's season to end (again, if this is true?). Needless to say, a big loss for Duke baseball BUT the good news is he has Duke moving in the right direction. And the upgrades to Coombs Stadium should help attract better recruits and better coaches. I would think there must be some up and coming assistant coaches at the big programs or head coaches at smaller programs would LOVE to come to Duke.

Duke has a freshman class coming in next season that is rated among the top 12 in country, with 6 ranked among the top 100, which is excellent when it comes to baseball.

Whether it is Jordan, or someone else, it is imperative to keep that freshman class in tact, as well as finding some pieces from the portal. I have a feeling we may see an exodus of current Duke players heading to the portal, as well. I am also fearful several of the 2025 recruiting class may follow Pollard to UVA.

Yep, in today's world, I would bet that this will happen - we'll lose a bunch of recruits and several existing players too. May be a down year next year, unless the new coach can hit the portal hard.

It’s official. This soon causes a pause in my respect for Chris Pollard.
It's the nature of the beast. He's got a roster to build at UVa, same as the new Duke coach is going to have a roster to build for us. The portal is open and guys are being recruited and committed at this second. We'll want the new Duke coach to be as committed to building for next year when he's hired.

I'm bummed, but I have no loss of respect. He's done great things for us, maybe he was ready for a change.
There is no way for this to be announced this morning without him being in negotiations with them while his team was trying to get to Omaha. Just my opinion, but I don’t see how there is zero impact on the respect a Duke fan would have for the man after that. My respect for UVa isn’t entirely intact, either.

And if Duke announces the hire of the assistant mentioned above within 24 hours of LSU's season ending, or even before, how will you feel?

puts that press conference after game 2 about "gratitude" and "getting to spend one more day with your team" in a whole new light, huh

Fair point. I hate hypocrisy. Though I think the bar is a bit different for an assistant than a head coach.

I think the optics of it would have been better if he had waited 24-48 hours. He is a bright guy with a good staff and wasn't going to be spending 24 hours a day preparing for this series. But at the same time it gives the impression he wasn't all in. I'm sure he was, but it just doesn't look good. These are not simple conversations. It isn't just salary. It is about recruiting budgets. What kind of academic qualifications will they accept. What is their NIL plan. Facilities. Hiring assistant coaches. Travel. And so on. Obviously he is likely very familiar with UVA's program so it was in some ways easier, but it still takes time, energy, and a lot of back and forth conversations. It is this attention to detail that made him succeed at Duke and I'm sure he was asking all of these questions.

I know I'm old fashioned. But optics are important. It is amazing what a difference a day or two makes.

That being said, I am extremely grateful to Coach Pollard. He greatly raised the quality of Duke's baseball program while, at least from my limited knowledge, representing the program and university in a very fine way. This very minor bump in the road does not throw away the huge amount of good he has done for Duke. Thank you.

I agree with those who already replied to you. It’s basically the difference between Jai leaving Duke MBB as he did, and Jon leaving the morning after the Final Four loss. Apples and cumquats.
