Duke Baseball Season 2025 - One Run Short of Omaha

I just got home. That was intense for 8 innings, but B9 was fun. I had faith Duke would eventually get it done on bullpen day and save Owen for FSU's superstar starter. Pitt's staff ERA is about 7 from the 4 games we've seen this year. Duke's ERA is closer to 4. Eventually that had to show up in the run column. I guess Bell (Pitt's coach) used too many arms yesterday so he had to leave the last guy in way too long.

The Winslow homer was the highlight rather than the final walk. I didn't see that coming. That was the point where the crowd and Duke really started believing and Pitt really started doubting. We do need to teach our baseball parents how to do the "Let's Go Duke" cheer unless the team has nixed it.

Of the <10% capacity tonight crowd, the place was 90% Duke fans with a few bored opposing fans scattered in and unhappy UVA fans wanting our game to end 2 hours ago. Both Pitt fans made the trip down. John Danowski and the Cal baseball players (who were cheering for Duke tonight for some reason) all sat in my row but missed the real fireworks B9.

Survive and advance. FSU, like every team that got a double bye, is a challenge but very beatable. The entire pitching staff - Zatkowski is available for Friday 3PM.

I tuned in at the Devil moment . 8th inning. That was a fan Tastic moment. Winslow strike throw to first on defense was great as was his home run off a 101 mph pitch. Good interview too. Chris Pollard is one of the many great coaches at Duke

Replay is 10AM on ACCN. RPI is up to 29. Losing to FSU won't move Duke down from a 2 to a 3. Winning the ACCT won't move Duke up to a 1 until Jack Coombs Field has the empty seating capacity of UNC, NCSU, etc. with permanent bathrooms and concession stands.

Excellent insights and points, duke2x. Curious: do you know these (2/3 seed, inability to host regional) to be facts, or your informed opinion?

Uninformed opinion and complete cynicism.

I look at this way: shipping Duke to OK last year was a historic snub for an ACC team after winning the ACCT with Duke's RPI. The only other team of knowledge that got that type of snub was ECU. They upgraded their stadium and hosted last year. It's all about the benjamin$ for the NCAA since the NCAA gets a large % of revenue from seats sold...not a flat fee.

Apparently the Duke and UNC games are on separate tickets on Friday. The UNC game is almost out of tickets. (They sold out many, many years ago.) The Duke game has a fair number of tickets available if you can sneak out of work at 2PM on a holiday weekend for a 3PM first pitch.

The UVA fans stayed unhappy, as sometime after midnight 14th seed BC beat 6 seed Virginia, 12-8.

Thanks to the new format, I haven't had an opportunity to go on my annual rant about the idiocy of the pool format this year. That said, the pool format had one advantage over the current format - they played 3/3/3/3/2/1 games per day rather than 4/4/2/2/2/1 games. Either way it was 15 games, but the prior format involved only 12 teams.

Essentially they replaced the four "exhibition" games with four real games, allowing 16 rather than 12 teams to participate. That's good! They then moved one game each from Thursday and Friday to Tuesday and Wednesday. That's crazy! Just keep this format, put the schedule back, and let the games end before midnight.
