Duke Baseball 2024, ACC Champs!

The stink of college athletics is becoming nauseating. It is being alleged that this A&M coach agreed to come to Texas back in April and he and his staff have been actually recruiting for Texas since that time. It is also alleged that the same thing occurred when this coach moved from TCU to A&M.

UT swipes A&M’s coach.

I’ve got a bad feeling about this.

Can civilians issue a BOLO? Be on the lookout for a Gulfstream with tail number N817RA, the plane that whisked away Jimbo Fisher from Tallahassee in 2017 and Mike Elko from Durham in 2023.

For fun (?), I went to the baseball forum of the TexAgs fan board and collected a few comments from A&M fans, who were understandably upset about Jim Schlossnagle's sudden (or not-so sudden) defection to their hated rivals in Austin. Many of these fans were karma-impaired. I'll keep the quotes clean here, but let's just say they don't use a wanker filter.

"I don't care that he left, I just question how he did it." (link)

"Schloss said one thing, then turned around and went against his word. He stands for nothing." (link)

"We put a ton of faith and resources behind that guy to build a powerhouse program. To spurn us for the next shiny object he sees was despicable." (link)

"Should TCU have filed a lawsuit against us when we hired [Schlossnagle]? What about FSU when we hired Jimbo? Coaches take new jobs all the time. Why is this one different? Because it hurt your feelings?" (link)

"Well, at least we got Mike Elko and the power of friendship" (link)

Couldn't happen to a nicer crowd.

And here I thought we had solved all this......

While I was one that defended Elko as being in a really tough, tough spot, even though he could have handled things better, Schloss just showed everyone how it's done.

He made probably one of the most severe departures to another school a coach could make at one of the most raw times for the school he was leaving. And his opening press conference today was stellar. He was contrite and thankful to A&M with a keen self-awareness that his words might not matter. Games in college station are going to be something next time Texas goes there.

On the subject of coaches leaving to head that "other" program, I wondered about this a while back. It's the Rick Pitino question. Play along with the unlikeliest of scenarios.

The year is 2000. Guthridge has retired, and Williams is not coming. The former coach at Duke, in the pros but thinking about leaving, gets a call from someone in Chapel Hill. Would he have considered it?

What does this have to do with Duke Baseball?

12 ACC Players Selected on Opening Night of 2024 MLB Draft

Santucci to the Mets at pick #46

Three Wake Forest Demon Deacons were selected in the top 10 of the 2024 MLB Draft, becoming just the second team ever to achieve the feat, joining the 2004 Rice Owls. The Demon Deacons saw Chase Burns, Nick Kurtz and Seaver King fly off of the board and begin their professional careers early in the evening.

Impressive for the Deacs, though it makes one wonder how they managed only a 15-15 record in ACC Conference play.

Fourth highest pick in Duke history. Congrats Jonathan,

Pitcher Nick Conte was taken by Kansas City in the 8th round. Which, considering he missed all of 2023 and barely pitched this season, seems baffling? I guess he had a really good pro day?

Fran Oschell drafted by LAA #352/12th round. Didn't know he was eligible or even in the draft. Wondering why no one has drafted Obee.

Oschell is a fascinating draft. Clearly has the potential for a dynamite reliever, if a team can get him back on track again.

Unfortunately the angels are not known for minor leagues development

Comments on Santucci to the Mets from "our favorite draft picks" piece on MLB.com

Mets: Jonathan Santucci, LHP (second round)
New York employed a strategy of taking pitchers with terrific stuff but questionable histories of health, and the Duke southpaw is the poster child for that. His 92-96 mph fastball and low-80s, two-plane slider both earn plus grades, and his changeup could be an above-average pitch with higher usage. He’s been limited by elbow surgery last year and a rib injury this spring, but if it comes together, there is midrotation upside in a Mets system that has helped Christian Scott and Brandon Sproat break out in recent years.
