Duke Alums on the 2024 PGA and LPGA Tours

Who are you scoring? I assume it's the same group tomorrow, or do you stick to a course? Good luck getting a Dukie on the weekend.
We change groups. I had Brandon Wu today, who had some challenges and ended up +1. Also SH Kim and Ben Kuhles. I forget my group tomorrow (I AM old!) but no one notable. I am off on Saturday, but hopefully I get someone interesting on sunday.

tomorrow I have Daffue, Albertson and a kid named Doyle. We are assigned by random draw, so we can change course as well as groups. I was on Seaside today and will be tomorrow as well.

49 degrees and a 15 MPH wind off the ocean as they tee off.

Edit: LOL, they have a video of Alex's tee shot. He's bundled up and wearing a stocking cap pulled low.

Double Edit: He misses a 20-inch putt. Oh well, there's always next year.

Alex finishes T64, right on the cut, but his was the first group out so no idea if he will make the weekend. He went +1, but his playing partners were +5 and +8 so he did pretty well. Bad luck of the draw with the weather.

There's high drama on the courses as numbers 124, 125, 126, and 128 are all currently T64. Numbers 120, 121, 122, and 123 are missing the cut.

It was brutally cold and windy. The peak wind was 11A-1p… 20mph with gusts even greater. They let the sign carriers quit because it was too hard to carry them! Playing Plantation today was a huge advantage, especially with earlier tee times before the wind really picked up. (Also those with early tee times on plantation would have had late tee times yesterday on seaside, when the wind had calmed down.

The cut line ended at -1.

Since the Scorers carry the 2 way radios to communicate with the base, we can hear every call for rules officials. There were tons today! Also multiple golfers had to quit (usually that’s for a medical reason). There were several of those today as well.

And lots of calls to correct scores! My teammates were making mistakes! I DO need to whip them into shape!

The luck of the draw was very, very important. The Plantation course played much easier than Seaside on both days, but the difference was most dramatic yesterday. After day 1, the majority of the leaders had played Plantation. But after day 2 many of those dropped below the cut line and more than 2/3 of the players who made the cut played Plantation on the second day. All of my golfers from day 1 on Seaside shot over par, but two of those made the cut after playing on the easier Plantation course on Friday. Conversely, two of my three players on day two came in below par (-2 and -3) after playing Plantation on day 1, and neither made the cut after a few disastrous holes on Seaside. The interesting thing was that their terrible holes came late in the round when the wind was not quite as fierce….I think it was the result of an exhausting outing.

It is also interesting (to me) to see the different ways they react. I understand the loud F-bomb from a qualifier who was on his way to making the cut before a disastrous snowman, but some players will produce a lengthy string of them after a few unlucky bounces. And one player who also was on the cut line before a few very unlucky bounces never got angry and even engaged in a nice conversation with me (which never happens!) after his round had already gone south.

Alex is projected to fall from #119 to #121. He may have gotten extremely lucky. Numbers 120, 122, 123, and 125 also missed the cut (#121 didn't play for some reason). The guys currently projected at numbers 126 (the missing #124 in the previous sentence), 128, and 129 made the cut on the number so could easily move above Alex with a good weekend. But because the guys immediately below Alex missed they cut, he has that buffer and should be safe. Again a perfect storm could bump him as others below those mentioned could have a really good weekend and vault up.

With just 18 holes left in the season, Alex is currently projected to fall from #119 to #123, only 15 points above #126. However, #126 isn't playing (nor are numbers 124, 125, and 127), and the 2 guys immediately above him both went -7 today (tied with 2 others for round of the day) and will probably fall back tomorrow. But anything can happen, Alex won't be resting easy until this tournament is over. I expect him to end up #121 give or take a spot.

dudog….thanks for all this info! Conditions should be very good tomorrow….60s and low wind. The course can be pretty easy for the pros when the wind dies down.

So his main threats are Thorbjornsen, Berger, Norlander and Springer? Are there others?

Yep, those are the main guys. Thorbjornsen & Berger are T3 so getting a lot of points, but therefore even a drop of a few places will cost them a lot of points. Dropping to just T5 would probably drop Thorbjornsen below Alex. Norlander & Springer are the 2 who shot lights out today.

Also have to keep an eye on Dahmen, who went E today and may have missed his opportunity. But he's only 23 points behind Alex so a really good showing tomorrow could vault him up the rankings. Anyone below Dahmen is probably too far back, but a fantastic round could do it. So all the guys in the 1st paragraph would have to hold position, and Dahmen and 2 others would have to have great rounds. That's why I think Alex is safe, but it's not impossible.

This is kinda interesting. Eight top-50 guys made the cut, and none are in contention. The nearest is 7 strokes back at T20.
