Down the road: Hubert fired, M Malone hired

“Carolina basketball is unique and special” is the most UNC quote ever. Their ridiculously inflated sense of self-importance is comical. I once had a conversation with someone who worked in athletics there who was repeatedly spewing similar garbage and I was nauseous.

Of course, the clause could also be interpreted in a very different way than they intended. Because they certainly are unique!
Special is also frequently used euphemistically for other things. . .

"Michael was the first coach we engaged with as part of the search process because of his reputation as a selfless teacher and innovator who brings an incredible ability to connect with players and get the absolute best out of those he mentors,'' said Executive Associate Athletic Director Steve Newmark, who will become Carolina's director of athletics on July 1. "He is a brilliant coach who will deliver a modern and disciplined approach to leading our men's basketball program, which is critical in the current landscape of college athletics. Carolina basketball is unique and special – and we have hired a leader well-suited to continuing our championship tradition."
Everything after “because” is the key to making that first sentence true.

They engaged with Brad Stevens first because he was simply the best option possible. They engaged with May and Lloyd because they were the next best options. They engaged with others for other unique reasons. Then they finally engaged with Malone for the reasons stated above, with him being the first one they engaged with for those specific reasons. So it may be technically true as stated.

Can’t get engaged if all the previous people said no. Their definition of “engaged” requires a yes like before a marriage. Now for the honeymoon. They didn’t even get a prenup.

I just heard coach Chuck Martin might be joining the unc coaching staff. He's the assistant coach and recruiter of Calipari's players at Arkansas. Heard something about he has a history with Michael Malone at Manhattan University i believe. I hope that's just a rumour and not true or UNC could be bringing in big recruits again

I read that rumor 2 days ago. Didn’t post because of the policy here, and I couldn’t find any articles to link. But the Arkansas fans have been talking about it nonstop. Chuck must have replaced Jai as Calipari’s top recruiter when Jai left to come to Duke.

Apparently, Martin makes significantly less money than Cal’s other 2 assistants. I can’t believe Cal wouldn’t give him a big raise to keep him. I guess we’ll see.

No longer a rumor. On3 reports that Coach Malone made Chuck Martin his associate head coach.

Martin worked on John Calipari’s staff at Kentucky from 2023-24 and joined him at Arkansas in 2024. He previously served as the head coach at Marist from 2008-13 before working as an assistant at Indiana, South Carolina, Oregon, Kentucky and Arkansas.

From 1999-2000, Martin worked with Malone on the staff at Manhattan. That was Malone’s last college coaching job before making the move to the NBA following the 2000-01 season, and Martin is set to be his first major hire after taking the North Carolina job.

I believe I heard Malone say yesterday that the UNC job is the only college job he would ever consider taking and that if others called he wouldn’t even answer the phone. Does he really expect us to believe that he wouldn’t have even talked to Michigan, UConn, Arizona, Florida, or Duke if any had contacted him 2 weeks ago? Sounds like the self-important, puffed up Carolina Way has rubbed off on him already.

This is the kind of guy Malone needed to bring in. Malone doesn’t know the college players or the AAU world or have relationships with the connectors in recruiting. He needed a guy — more than one really - who can identify players and can do it fast. Like I said he’s going to need more like this. I don’t think Sean May is gonna get the job done.

The Carolina Way is a disease, but didn’t think contagious.
