Cooper Profiles

Can't wait to see Cooper play vs Kentucky and other power teams over the next several weeks.

Do we need to have a "cramping vigil"?

You would think between Gatorade and Duke Sports Medicine they could figure it out. Perhaps a smoothie with banana turmeric cayenne and mango.

Hi everyone, please excuse my intrusion and also my English!

I signed up because I was enthusiastic by Cooper Flagg!
I have never seen a freshman with these characteristics of defender and leader!

I have two question for you Duke basketball’s experts.

1- as a defender are he already able to guard point guards and small, quick guards due to his quick feet?

2- as a shooter I have already noticed an improvement (9/26 34% last 8 games 8/16 50% last 5 games) but can we say that today he is only a "catch and shoot" shooter?

Do you think we could also see from him some “shot off the dribble” shots by the end of the year?

In my opinion this improvement would take him to another even higher level also from an NBA perspective

Thank you all

Welcome! Flagg's reputation has spread far and wide. Where are you following him from?

Duke tends to switch almost everything on defense and Cooper has shown an ability to defend small guards. (Even Maluach was defending small guards against Pitt last game.) I'm not sure Flagg has the absolute foot speed to keep up with a truly elite guard in isolation. Fortunately, basketball is a team sport and Duke is playing elite team defense.

As to his shooting, his mid-range game certainly includes shooting off the dribble. His 3 point shooting is steadily improving, but he doesn't yet seem comfortable pulling up for a three when leading a fast break - not the way McCain routinely did last season.

Edit to add: A nice Flagg story in the Washington Post (gift link):

"'Before Victor Wembanyama was drafted, NBA fans would do anything to catch a glimpse of him: YouTube clips, social media, the fuzziest stream of European games,' said Neal Pilson, a sports television consultant and the former president of CBS Sports. 'Now with Flagg, it’s the likely number one pick playing for Duke — not just any major college — and he’s on ESPN all the time.'"

Definitely an interesting read on Cooper and his family. It amazing to me how focused the entire family seems to be on basketball, right from when their kids were very young (and even before that for both his mother and father). It reminds me a little of the stories about Tiger Woods and his father, Earl Woods, and how his father, having retired from the military, basically devoted his life to pushing Tiger to be the best golfer possible, from a very young age. I've never read in any of the stories about Cooper what his parents do for a living up in Maine. My sister-in-law lives in that general vicinity of Maine, near Bangor - the state capital, and it is far out "in the sticks" of Maine. Lots of trees and lakes and very rural areas.

Brian Rauf has a hot take on Cooper Flagg.

Also, lol at that the throwaway line, "I've seen Paolo Banchero and Zion Williamson play at Duke. I've seen guys play in Chapel Hill."
