Conference Realignment

The announcement makes no mention of Gonzaga adding football but talks a lot about how they are forming a pretty darn strong basketball conference:

The addition of Gonzaga to the Pac-12 provides a tremendous boost to the league's men's basketball reputation and is complimented by recent success from future and current members. Of the future eight members, seven have appeared in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament over the past four seasons with a combined 18 appearances in that time (since the 2021 Tournament), including Gonzaga's run to the National Championship in 2021 and San Diego State's National Championship appearance in 2023.

I'd characterize this conference as adequate in b-ball. Gonzaga and SDSU have made the championship game recently, but all others have no tradition. WSU has 0 success in last 100 years (bread banner in eatly 1900s) and Oregon State last final 4 in 1963. Nothing else.

I wonder if this completely kills UConn’s B12 bid. The idea of creating the preeminent MBB conference was generally thought to include an add of Gonzaga as well

Very recent success (last year) better than I thought. Fresno and Oregon State were bad, but 5 of the 8 teams had KenPom rankings between 22-51 and Gonzaga #12.

The "headcanon" is that Uconn would join the PAC in football only....whether that is real or imagined by folks at the boneyard is unknown.

Today the PAC adds Gonzaga, who appeared in the 2021 NCAA Tournament title game, and may need to change their name to Gonzaga State to fit in. Meanwhile, the Mountain West adds UTEP, a team that once won the whole thing:

Granted, that was 1966 and they were called Texas Western, but it was historically significant, and 40 years later they made a movie about it.

I was mistaken before when I said a conference needs 8 football members. They need 8 full members -- Hawai'i is football only, so the Mountain West still needs one more. My guess was/is Texas State from the Sun Belt, and ESPN says there's a verbal offer.

Because of geography, the Mountain West was always going to have an easier time adding football teams than the PAC. I think the PAC needs to elevate an FCS team or two (Sacramento State, Idaho, Montana, etc.) if they want to stay regional.
