Caleb Foster returning to Duke for 2025-26 Season

are you suggesting tha CJS forces players to leave? Are you suggesting that CJS threatens players that their scholarship will be revoked? Exactly how is it that players leave not by choice?
More that Jon had an honest conversation with him and he didn’t like what he heard in terms of his expected role and who else was coming in.

I’m so psyched about this. Caleb essentially resurrected himself in March, going from a DNP on senior night to pivotal in our second and third wins against UNC to our sixth man in the tourney. That shows a lot about the young man’s character and ability to be coached. I think he’s a prime candidate to take a big leap this offseason and I’m so happy he’s going to do it in a Duke uniform.

I love it! Resiliency is a HUGE factor in life, and Caleb has it. I think he's going to work hard in the off season and come back better next season. The way he persevered in the headwinds of what seemed to be a severe loss of confidence to get back into being a solid contributor in both tournaments says a lot about Caleb as a person and a player.

Really excited to have him back next year. I think with a full offseason to put in work he’s going to be much more consistent and effective next year!

agree 100!..still wish Coach had played him in 2nd half...even though he didn't shoot well ...he disrupted Houston's defensive screen and could get to middle of lane. Improving his outside shoot is key but to get to next level for team he's got to learn how get the ball out of his hands, the ball has to move and run the plays called .... to me he dribbled in place way to much. That would be my wish. But glad he is back and don't think anyone from transfer portal would be better for us given all considerations.

On3 is not checking DBR often enough, and is slow to pick up the story this Thursday morning.

Shall I start the Caleb Minutes thread, or should I leave it to @brevity? 😎

Thanks for thinking of me, but all minutes discussions and other predictive threads are outside my jurisdiction and level of interest. If you can create an isolated MBB: 2025-26 Minutes Discussion Thread that will hold all of that speculation without it spilling into other threads, you'll get all the sporks.

I should have used the non-existent sarcasm font. 😎

Glad to see Caleb choosing to return next year and hope to see him build off his play at the end of the year. With him and the 4 incoming freshmen we now at least have a starting 5 for next season.

Great news.

In this era I understand why players make the decisions they do, particularly given the incentives. But it makes me cherish the players who stay even more. We got 3 years of Wendell Moore, 4 years of Jeremy Roach, (at least)3 years of Tyrese Proctor, and (at least)3 years of Caleb Foster. That's not bad. One of the most rewarding things to me is watching players grow. Caleb went through a really rough time this year. It must have been especially tough given how otherwise joyous and successful the season was for the team. I don't think anyone could have blamed Caleb for wanting a change of scenery. But his redemption arc already started in March and has the chance to continue.

Caleb is going to be a key piece next year. There's a really good player in there, and it will be fascinating to see if Caleb and Jon can figure it out. I think a key ingredient will be finding a backcourt running mate that he fits with. Unfortunately, I just don't think he and Tyrese worked together very well. Their skillsets were too similar. I think if given the right responsibilities, Caleb can be really good. He can be a solid perimeter defender, spot up shooter, and opportunistic driver. It sounds like Cayden Boozer has more natural PG instincts and may be the lead ball handler. For a 3rd guard, I wouldn't mind a transfer who could bring some of what Sion did last year in terms of physicality and rim pressure.

There’s a gray area between “coach says get outta here” and both sides understanding that parting ways is the right move. This can be communicated myriad ways. Coach is HONEST, always, it’s the word you hear over and over again from his players. That honesty might sound like “hey Jeremy, you’re not playing PG next year.”

Or it might be “Isaiah, we can’t match a $3MM offer from NC State.” Or “Caleb, I’m going to recruit additional ball handlers for next year to help our team out, but you are always going to have a shot at starting.”

I think it’s perfectly reasonable to be a player and feel like it’s not your choice to leave, but the constellation of other factors are forcing your hand. No one is saying they’re a victim of a cutthroat coach. Your line of questioning is a little uncharitable, imo.

Agreed, there’s absolutely no need to chew someone out for pointing out the unsavory truth that players sometimes have to read the writing on the wall. What a ridiculous, immature response.

What excellent news!

Caleb and Jon worked very hard to revive Caleb's confidence this year.

I'm really happy that Caleb's next chapter will be at Duke. We'll need him, that's for sure.

Great news! So glad to be getting Caleb back! I think he showed what he is made of when he didn’t sulk this past season, hung in there, and really started to redeem himself. Looking forward to seeing you in Duke blue again next year Caleb!
