It's not unreal. It's because they cheated.

I hope this doesn’t come across the wrong way, but it would be the dumbest thing in the world for an AD to cheat for the benefit of a women’s soccer or field hockey team. Not saying it’s impossible, but to risk your career to become the best at two sports that lose money for the school and are basically ignored by everyone would be the most foolish thing ever. If you’re going to cheat and take on career risk, I gotta imagine it’s only in sports that move the needle to make the upside worth the risk (i.e., football and MBB)

Women's soccer was dirty as *censored*. It wasn't set up for women's soccer, but they took advantage of it when necessary. In particular for players who made the women's national team. They could still take classes and train for international play at the same time. The cheating also helped the occasional marginal student-athlete stay eligible.

For field hockey, no idea....but at some point the UNC myth builds and elite athletes in non cheating sports just want to be around other winners.

All of UNCs accomplishments from the 90s and 00s are null and void, IMHO.
