Buh bye! Mack Brown out at UNC

Is it just me or does anyone else (NC native here) remember how mad Cheat fans were when Mack DARED to leave them for TX back whenever it was? I always found it hilarious that they then later welcomed him back for this latest stretch as their HC. Of course, I'm always sorry to see a mediocre coach leave the Hill :p

Over on IC, nascarjimmy1031 says carolina football is doomed to fail in the short term because: 1) Their enrollment/alumni base is too small with too many D1 competitors nearby 2) their NIL dollars at stretched too thin because of non-revenue sports and 3). they’re in the wrong conference.

Solution: 1)drastically increase enrollment
2) cut non revenue sports and 3) buy their way out of the ACC.

You have to admit drastically increasing enrollment, to pay the football team more money, is a no brainer. Duh!

I have an aging brain, but I believe the sequence that got Mack to leave Chapel Hill was that his team was undefeated, and FSU was coming to UNC for a showdown of undefeateds, and Dean announced his retirement early that week. UNC lost, but the game hype was totally lost in the Dean Smith story, and Mack realized he'd always be the undercard to basketball, and started looking. If Olympic Fan were still alive, he'd post an historical analysis for us, but, alas.

If UNC were to move to the SEC or BIG10 they would become Vanderbilt in perpetuity. Surely some part of their hubristic selves knows this intuitively.

So Nascar Jimmy essentially says “stop trying to fulfill your mission as a state supported public institution in any capacity whatsoever And poop-can all non-revenue sports to preserve your NIL dollars for football. That is astonishingly moronic, not to mention his suggestion to increase the alumni base. Someone nominate him for Chancellor since they arent too happy with Roberts.

If I'm UNC, I'm packing up the Brinks truck now (whats left after Macks 2.8 mil buyout) and I'm sending it down to New Orleans to hire Jon Sumrall from Tulane. I know some have Jamie Chadwell pegged as the replacement, but he's been kind of underwhelming at Liberty and he gives off that sort of vibe that Larry Fedora did, gimmicky offense and occasional bad decision making

Man I sure hope this doesn’t happen. For multiple reasons.

Oddly enough, Mack was the coach down there when I graduated in 1986.

I think the odds are they get Sumrall. That has to be their one and only option.

(Always seemed like there should be another “m” and an “e” in his name). Can’t spell Summerall without “me”…
Oh wait…

Yes. I don't see Duke waving palm fronds for Mike Elko's return any time soon.

No pie bet on that tho.

Well, the one silver lining to them hiring Sumrall is that we play Tulane in 25 and 26. That's a home and home that looks a lot tougher than the last time we played.

As for the Sleeping Giant stuff, many decades of CFB history says you are who you are. There's very little class mobility in this sport.

So we are still guaranteed to play Sumrall…

ya, there seems to be a lesson that at least as far as the football playoff rankings go, you're better off with a gaudy record in a lesser conference than a good record in a great conference...unc would get chewed up and spit out in the SEC...I do think the Big 10 is another story, that's a top heavy conference with some really good teams at the top, but pretty middling otherwise...

B10 is the answer if you’re the UNC administration actually ignoring the fans. Problem is that your fans would want you in the SEC bc it’s geographically and (sadly increasingly) culturally more aligned

I don’t think they’d get killed as much as people think in the SEC, but they’d be USC in the best years, and more like Arkansas in regular years. Contrast that with a shot at a conference title (and now playoff) every third or fourth year, and you’re better off staying

Haha no way - Vanderbilt has a stellar academic reputation. 🤣 I keed, I keed, not really tho.

It’s weird to fire the coach and then have him coach another game.

It makes sense. Mack will beat State, because, well, it’s State. They had to fire him before that because it looks worse to fire someone after they beat a rival.

Interesting article in the Nashville Tennessean (paywalled) this week criticizing SEC Commissioner for creating a mega conference where everyone beats everyone so everyone looks mediocre. The article claims the ACC is particularly benefiting as now two teams, and possibly even three ACC teams will make the playoff instead of the six SEC teams Stankey was touting on Twitter the day before last Saturday’s debacle when Alabama, texas A&M and Ole Miss lost to inferior teams. This mega conference thing may not work out so well after all. To Clemson, Florida State and UNC be careful what you wish for.
