Buh bye! Mack Brown out at UNC, Bill Belichick in

I can’t say it’s a big loss for us. He was the running backs coach, and our running game this year was…. well…. Mostly non-existent. A couple nice breakaway runs, but overall, our running plays were 0-2 yards, and our rushing yardage was nothing to write home about. That said, I wish Mr. Simmons the best at FIU.
Yeah, my wife got tired of me saying how our RB coach needed to emphasize hitting holes and running downhill, and cutting down on the dancing behind the line and reflexively trying to kick plays outside.

agree fully on Star's dancing, much prefer a guy who hits the hole much harder, but I have to concede Willie was handicapped by losing his top two running backs (Waters and Moore) and a very mediocre run game OL... Star had his moments but a hard runner he was not.

Agree on all counts. Just think there were too many instances where we could've gained a few yards by running hard initially and falling forward, but instead tried to bounce outside and wound up losing yardage. ~5 yard net impact to the negative, which is meaningful.

he's lost a bit of luster, too, in that he got rolled by a not at all that great Army team...

As for Bill and Bill Jr, so what happens if they make a contract, Bill ends up sucking, they're still obligated to hire Junior? Makes zero sense (which is why they might do it).

Unfortunately, I think it’s Sumrall.

Which is 100% the worst outcome

Supposedly the Tulane coach who is a Kentucky alum has made it clear he wants to become the Kentucky coach. Another year for Stoops like he had this year at Kentucky and Sumrall will get his wish. So UNC seems unlikely.

ESPN's Pete Thamel: "Sources: Tulane coach Jon Sumrall has informed Tulane officials that he’s not pursuing any of the open jobs in this cycle. Sumrall’s name had been one of interest for all of the open Power 4 jobs."

Words matter. There’s a difference between “not pursuing” and “not considering”. Just saying…

much fun at Inside Carolina reading about their exciting bowl at Fenway park. Hotel rooms are very expensive, organized parking is non existent, and the weather is not going to be good at all. The dozens of unc fans there will not be pleased. This is all too perfect.

Love this!!

Lovely.

Someone should hack into Google Maps and adjust the driving directions for the trip home.

Maybe a left turn at Fredericksburg.

Women's soccer was dirty as *censored*. It wasn't set up for women's soccer, but they took advantage of it when necessary. In particular for players who made the women's national team. They could still take classes and train for international play at the same time. The cheating also helped the occasional marginal student-athlete stay eligible.

For field hockey, no idea....but at some point the UNC myth builds and elite athletes in non cheating sports just want to be around other winners.

All of UNCs accomplishments from the 90s and 00s are null and void, IMHO.
One summer a couple decades ago I was at UNC taking a week long summer course for a national soccer coaching license. During down time I ended up hanging out with Dorrance and his assistant Elmar Bolowich. One day we were in Anson’s office when the phone rang. It was the admissions office calling to ask if a prospective soccer admitee was important enough to allow in despite her poor grades. Anson said go ahead and admit her and that was it. No discussion at all. What Anson wanted, Anson got.

And yet another bizzarre phone call the same day. One of Anson’s better players called him imploring him to not write her off after her recent ACL tear. Or as Anson laughingly described the call, “That was Abby begging me to not write her off. I assured her I wouldn’t, as I wrote her off!” Hahaha, right? He really appreciated his own sense of humor.

Anson had a fiefdom at UNC. A very successful one, but it wasn't pretty how the sausage was made.

Yea, whoever thought that playing a fourth tier bowl game, between two extremely mediocre college football teams, in late December in Boston, in a stadium that is barely big enough to play a baseball game in, would be a good idea should be fired from their job.

Perhaps I shouldn't speculate about this, but I used to wonder if this is how it was at Duke with Coach K and the men's basketball program.

I don't know specifically about K and admissions but my guess is that he didn’t go after players who wouldn’t be able to succeed in the classroom.

I can however speak to the integrity of the football program. I was teaching a summer stats class and our best football player was in it. He was special enough that articles were being written specifically about him in the N&O and the Durham Herald. Anyway he was getting D’s in my class and flirting with an F. I was worried for his continued eligibility (and honestly, our fb season) so I called up fb’s academic assistance director and told him (her? can't remember) about his performance in class. Their response was unequivocal - they would talk to him but whatever grade he gets, he gets. Zero pressure to pass him. I was impressed. 👍
