Buh bye! Mack Brown out at UNC, Bill Belichick in

The only hope is that an SEC job opens that he would take. But if I’m him, I’d take the UNC job. Unfortunately
This is a pie bet I’d take. It makes zero sense for Bill to take that job. I get UNC wanting his name but unless they are paying $20 million, Bill has basically no incentive to take a mediocre college football job. He’s not gonna recruit. He won’t be there more than a couple years. I will be shocked if this happened…

NFL insider Tom Pelissero tells The Rich Eisen Show that he's very skeptical of an eventual Belichick/UNC union.

"There are times where you get a piece of information, and I always sit back and evaluate and say: Does this sound too dumb for me to put this out into the universe right now? Bill Belichick and North Carolina have had conversations. The idea that Bill Belichick is going to be the next head coach of the Tar Heels, and be scraping to try to go 6-6 and get into the Cheez-It Bowl in Chapel Hill seems highly, highly unlikely at this point..."

That poster was referencing my post of certainty that Sumrall will be the next UNC coach

Agreeing to hire Billy's son is just a really bad idea, so that makes it plausible...could Billy actually get that commitment in writing? Seems absurd.

perfect. Make this happen.

I’ve got a little different take. UNC seems to be zeroing in on the Tulane coach, but I think the Belichick experiment could work too. I don’t think “recruiting” is what it used to be. It’s not about religiously texting “I love yous” to teenagers anymore. That’s what agent’s and collectives are for. So hiring a big name manager might draw attention if you can get a commitment towards NIL and assistant coaches. Having a succession plan for an elderly coach isn’t a bad idea. Although the players are no longer making a long term commitment, it still doesn’t hurt for them to have an expectation for if the head coach retires. If the program is strong when he retires, it’s a good thing. As long as the succession plan doesn’t come with a huge buyout, it’s not that big of a commitment. I think it could work if the $ is there. It could also go horribly wrong. But UNC football doesn’t have that much to lose. I think it’s a better idea than rolling the dice on a possible up-and-comer or another washed up dude. I mean Muschamp is available if you want to fail slowly. If an up- and-comer succeeds at UNC, he’s gone anyway.

Not a UNC update, but involves the coaching carousel and a Duke assistant

Sources: FIU to hire Duke assistant Willie Simmons as coach

Simmons, who spent the 2024 season as Duke's running backs coach, is receiving a four-year deal from FIU, according to a source. He replaces Mike MacIntyre, who was fired Sunday after going 12-24 in three seasons at the school.

I can’t say it’s a big loss for us. He was the running backs coach, and our running game this year was…. well…. Mostly non-existent. A couple nice breakaway runs, but overall, our running plays were 0-2 yards, and our rushing yardage was nothing to write home about. That said, I wish Mr. Simmons the best at FIU.

Supposedly the Tulane coach who is a Kentucky alum has made it clear he wants to become the Kentucky coach. Another year for Stoops like he had this year at Kentucky and Sumrall will get his wish. So UNC seems unlikely. Not sure why we are having this discussion. Who gives a damn what UNCCH does. Saban is not taking the job so we will have the better coach.

he's lost a bit of luster, too, in that he got rolled by a not at all that great Army team...

As for Bill and Bill Jr, so what happens if they make a contract, Bill ends up sucking, they're still obligated to hire Junior? Makes zero sense (which is why they might do it).
