Buh bye! Mack Brown out at UNC, Bill Belichick in

I was watching the NFL game last night and they mentioned that Ben Johnson, the Lions offensive coordinator who apparently has received NFL head coaching offers and will be a very hot commodity this offseason, is a UNC alum - looks like he was a backup QB. He is only 38. Has there been any mention of his name? I know the tried to speak to Arthur Smith, who is also a UNC alum. Johnson has spent most of his coaching career in the NFL so I assume he would want to stay there, but it seems like he would be a logical phone call.

Art Smith happens to be son of Fred Smith, founder of FedEx, so unc money is not apt to motivate him...the pain in the butt factor in college coaching is off the charts, can't see why a guy like Belichick, who will have NFL offers, would want to deal with recruiting, NIL, player retention, all that new nonsense...

Belichick, who will have NFL offers, would want
will he, tho? he's got a cheating scandal and the largest fine ever for that.......he's old, and there are only two crazy owners desperate enough to give him a try, both of whom are narcissists ....

No one cares about cheating scandals and fines in the NFL. It's just a meritocracy. If someone thinks Bill can help their organization win football games, he will get hired. How else do you explain that legions of domestic abusers over the years who continually got second, third, and fourth chances if they were talented?

Totally agree here, Bud. I mean, Bill B is 73, has to be worth millions of dollars, 6-time super bowl winner (at the highest level of football), and has a 24-year old girlfriend. Why would he want to be a college coach, especially at North Carolina - hardly a college football powerhouse. I mean, does Bill want to spend his "retirement" years driving down to Fuquay-Varina to watch a high school football game, hoping to convince some 16 or 17-year old kid to come to Chapel Hill to play football? I could POSSIBLY see him being interested in an Alabama or Ohio St (although I'm sure they would never even consider him) but UNC? Totally insane.

As an avid fan with a rooting interest and strong ties to both SEC and the ACC football during the past 50+years, I beg to differ with your assessment of UNC's prospects of success if the Heels had to play an SEC football schedule. In the past four seasons, UNC's record against conference foes in the ACC has been a mediocre 16-15; they'll need to beat NC State this Saturday to emerge with a slight winning record for that span. I don't believe it is either disrespectful or unrealistic to say that compiling a winning record against an SEC schedule is more difficult than compiling a winning record in the ACC, simply because the level of talent and physicality required to compete with SEC teams week after week is more demanding. Unless they could quickly upgrade the composition of their team after the move, I'm skeptical that UNC could consistently produce a .500 conference record in the SEC.
Exactly... UNC --> SEC == MD --> B1G... They'll flounder forever in football mediocrity if they successfully find their way to the SEC.

The only hope is that an SEC job opens that he would take. But if I’m him, I’d take the UNC job. Unfortunately
Also the irony that he was on our list and we didn’t hire him, then he may go to UNC, is not great. Don’t get me wrong, it has worked out for now of course. I think there’s much more realistic upside for us with Manny (virtual certainty that Sumrall would bolt from us the second we got really good; I can see Manny staying even if really successful after experiencing Miami and realizing that the grass isn’t always greener). But if Sumrall takes the job at UNC, will have extra motivation against us

yeah, I don't think it has ever been reported how much Kraft paid Bill, they had a private deal that went on forever, I'm sure it was a whopping amount. Can't see what unc offers that he needs...
