Yeah, maybe. But maybe he would do a great job at UNC. He certainly has the capabilities. And I probably don’t need to remind anyone that many football “experts” consider Bill Belichick to be the greatest football coach of all time. No, things did not go well his last several years in New England, but all coaching stints go stagnant at a certain point.This will likely be a fun disaster to watch.

I think it’s quite possible that he has been reinvigorated by his year away from the game. He looks fresh and eager and ready to go. Could it be a disaster? Yes, of course. But it could also turn out to be a stroke of genius by UNC. Only time will tell.
Oh, and don’t forget about his hot young girlfriend. That could be his ace in the hole, so to speak.

I’d like to believe what you say is true, but I don’t. Yes, Tom Brady is possibly the greatest quarterback of all time, but that doesn’t mean that Bill Belichick is not the greatest football coach of all time. The two things can both be true. And I think they are.
There was a discussion of Belichick and UNC on Get Up this morning. Apparently his central pitch is that there is no one better to prepare recruits for the NFL and that his program would be built around this focus. Reactions among the panelists were mixed, but all agreed that Bill appeared to be thinking very seriously about the job. But there was also some view that even if he took it, that would in no way preclude him from jumping back to the NFL in a year or two if the opportunity presented itself.Yeah, maybe. I don't think he's the greatest coach of all time, and his reliance on Brady, and a hell of a lot of other amazing talent that was rotated through with Brady as the constant, is telling. He didn't just go stale, he fell off a cliff without Brady.
But even if I stipulate that he's the greatest pro coach of all time, that is absolutely not the best preparation for becoming a college coach and managing youngsters who aren't under ironclad pro contracts but instead can bolt at any time, even mid-season. He's 72. This will be a disaster.

Not necessarily. I don’t think his age is a big deal. Recruiting HS kids need not be his responsibility. He’d need good and well paid assistants, and NIL. So a lot more money from boosters. If he gets it, he could do well in the ACC. The good news is that NIL$ spent on football is likely raised at the expense of basketball.
I hope you’re right in that it would be a disaster for UNC. And each of us is certainly entitled to think whatever we wish about Bill Belichick and where he stands in football history.
But the fact is most people who get paid to follow the NFL for a living — as well as most NFL coaches and also most players who have played for him — overwhelmingly agree that he is the best to ever do it.
I cannot wait to see how this plays out if he does become the UNC coach. All eyes of the football world will be on the Tar Heels, at least for the first half of the season. This would add some genuine interest to the ACC for many people who almost never pay attention to this conference.

No, the head coach now has to be so many things, 24/7/365, to everyone. He's not prepped for most of those college-today things. And he's too old, and I'm guessing stubborn, to learn, never mind to muster all the energy.

Agree wholeheartedly and hope he is hired tomorrow. UNC the best place for old football coaches to draw retirement benefits.

Okay I was the guy who said this was a stupid move (well one of many). I still think it's stupid. But as noted Bama grad Forest Gump said "stupid is as stupid does."
I guess you have to be on the inside to truly judge this potential hire but from the outside it sure looks like this hire is the football equivalent of “jumping the shark”. A Spectacle that draws attention but of questionable long-term strategic value.
I hope they give him a 10-year contract. And make it rollover.
That name of the BOT chair rang a bell but I had to drag out my old HS yearbook to check and...yep, that guy used to ride the same school bus as I did. He struck me as an arrogant jerk back then so of COURSE it makes total sense that he's head of BOT on Cheater Hill. I Googled him to make sure I had the right guy and the article I found said he graduated from UNC in 1990; I graduated Duke in '89 and he was a year AHEAD of me in high school so...umm...yeah. Truth is they need a serious culture change, and I guess this might do it....but continuing to look for quick fixes is part of their culture and part of why football always crumbles. In Football there is no quick fix, only hard work.
