Buh bye! Mack Brown out at UNC, Bill Belichick in

Perhaps I shouldn't speculate about this, but I used to wonder if this is how it was at Duke with Coach K and the men's basketball program.
The fact that Greg Newton and Ricky Price were suspended FROM THE UNIVERSITY due to cheating is proof he couldn't get everything he wanted. At least not in the mid 90s.

ESPN's Pete Thamel: "Sources: Tulane coach Jon Sumrall has informed Tulane officials that he’s not pursuing any of the open jobs in this cycle. Sumrall’s name had been one of interest for all of the open Power 4 jobs."

It's official -- or at least as official as these things get. From On3:

“I’m excited to announce that we have reached an agreement in principle with Jon Sumrall on a contract extension that will keep him as the Green Wave’s head football coach,” athletic director Davis Harris said.

Meanwhile, "Chapel Bill" (hat tip to @wilko) might be warming up, according to ESPN:

The UNC search has been scattered, according to sources, with an uncertainty in the industry about who is running it. Board of trustees chair John P. Preyer has been a key Belichick advocate throughout the process and has galvanized a group at the school behind Belichick's potential hire...

There are issues that loom over any Belichick's courtship, including the potential role of his son Stephen Belichick, UNC's NIL resources, Belichick's salary and resources for the staff.

I would be willing to chip in a little if UNC would hire the Belichicks. Maybe $25 a year, just for the humor?

Yea, whoever thought that playing a fourth tier bowl game, between two extremely mediocre college football teams, in late December in Boston, in a stadium that is barely big enough to play a baseball game in, would be a good idea should be fired from their job.
I really can't imagine who they expect to attend from unc...but a quick look at the UCONN board indicates they'll have a presence, they've been so bad recently...their last two bowl appearances in 2015 and 2022 were losses to Marshall in very weak bowls...

Was late from lunch and coming to post the same info about Sumrall, but the (current) Louisiana resident beat me to the punch. Good news for sure on multiple counts.

As the Belichick talks drag on, I can't even imagine how much lucre Bill is extracting from those fools...they're probably well into negotiations on the massage budget by now.

it's fine. more money to the coach is less money to the players that will actually help them win.

Here is what Belichick said on a radio talk show as reported in the Washington Post:

"IF I was in a College program it would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players that had the ability to play in the NFL..It would be a professional program at the College level..I don't have any doubt that the players would be ready for the NFL"

He's a perfect match for UNC, or for that matter Kentucky basketball.
