Backyard Gardeners

Hey, Big Wayne -- Does your Santa Cruz garden attract banana slugs?
No banana slugs. They like to stay in the deep woods. I can walk a few blocks from my house to a trail that has banana slugs.
What we do get in the garden is snails. I have horded snail/slug killer to try to combat them.

Currently, I am battling rats and/or bunnies that are trying to eat my small tomato plants.

Liquid Fence deer and rabbit repellent...

First time in Off Topic board. I am part of "Friends of Backyard Habitats" in Portland. The mission is to increase native plants, get rid off lawns and help native habitat (animals, plants). I got Platinum certification and it's been fun. Sadly my yard is very shaded but I managed to grab a community garden plot so I grow tomatoes and basil.
Looks great!

I have spent time this spring pulling English ivy out of my natural areas where it is layers thick vines. In the meantime, I have decided to try starting seeds to get some native plants going (over 200 in trays right now) to see if I can combat the ivy returning as well as deer munching.

We'll see.

I found using a trident like hand tool helps a lot with ivy. Had to get rid off that, spanish bluebells, and vinca!

I’m so jealous of all you right now. I am living in a small apartment and miss being able to do this. Hopefully one day I can get a place with enough space again, until then I’m just gonna keep peeping on y’all’s posts

We'll have some fresh picked asparagus for dinner tonight.

Peas are coming along nicely, but no harvest yet.

Blueberry fruit has sent and blackberries are coming alive.

Potatoes starting to shoot out of the ground.

It's gonna be a good year on the homstead.

It's about to be zucchini season here. Growing the stripey Cocozelle variety this year. Almost all of them are destined to be made into pickles.

Won a battle today against the gophers.....They've got some serious teeth.

I grow Asian long beans every year with great success. Controlling aphids is the only pest concerns one has to deal with which is easily accomplished with soapy water.

Our strawberry crop is almost finished ("strawberry season" around here last for about 12 minutes) but they have been super delicious, as always. I never cease to be amazed at how much better locally grown strawberries are than the ones you get in the grocery store from California (I'm on the east coast).

Like tomatoes that way.
