I chose to start my post-fellowship medical career at Duke despite being offered almost twice the salary to work somewhere else. Not all decisions are, or indeed should be, driven only by money.I wish him the best. Not for me to tell someone how to live their life, particularly when he seems to be committing to something positive. The NBA is a lot if your heart isn’t in it.
It was much, much less of a pay cut than AJ is taking but I once took a sizable pay cut to leave a job where I was miserable for something very different where I thought I would be happier and have a better quality of life. In hindsight there were pros and cons to the decision but we each run our own race.
Undoubtedly true. And keep in mind that AJ suffered two fairly serious knee injuries, 1 in HS and 1 during preseason of his freshman year at Duke, that sapped him of much of what had been exceptional athleticism. He was originally viewed as much more than a shooter or 3 and D type prospect, and his recovery from the first injury appeared encouraging (there was a photo of him slamming a teammate's miss in preseason where his hand was above the top of the square). And there was seemingly an assumption in the 2022 NBA Draft (at least among some scouts) that he would eventually recover similarly from the second injury. I don't think he ever really did, and was destined for a much more limited professional career as a result. I don't know AJ and I certainly don't have any insight into the factors behind his decision, but I can certainly understand the emotional toll that those injuries may have taken on him.I wish him the best. Not for me to tell someone how to live their life, particularly when he seems to be committing to something positive. The NBA is a lot if your heart isn’t in it.
