2025 Men's Basketball Recruiting

You're not looking hard enough. We should be able to blame Tyler Hansbrough in some form or fashion.

That was the moment I decided I actually like Tyler Hansbrough when he’s not on the court. I like that he was doing stupid college stuff notwithstanding that he is a scholarship athlete
9f though, still and always

Well, since various courts have found various laws don't allow the NCAA to enforce various rules, I'd imagine government is certainly part of it. And certainly part of any meaningful changes.

I don’t think the courts are wrong in preventing the NCAA from enforcing rules that prevent the players from exercising their freedom to go to school where they want and to make money in exchange for their skills and in recognition of the money they are making for their schools. It’s called restraint of trade.

This is only going to be “solved” by the unionization of the players and then the collective bargaining of what the rules will be.

Heavy lift when each state’s public schools have different collective bargaining laws, and then private schools with another set, too.

The challenge is that (IMO) that both you and @tommy are right. Which leads to this being close to an unsolvable problem. Could there be legislation to solve it? Sure. Will congresspeople and senators representing schools with vastly different interests be able to come to agreement on what should be done? Good luck with that.

For those that follow such things, Caleb Wilson received a couple of Crystal Balls on 247 Sports pointing towards that team 8 miles down 15-501.

UNC could face a mass exodus at the end of the season. RJ Davis and Jae'Lyn Withers will exhaust their eligibility. Ian Jackson and Drake Powell are both receiving NBA Draft buzz. Jason Evans has suggested that Elliot Cadeau may go pro in the Carmen Sandiego way (somewhere in the world). If that happens, UNC will be left with Seth Trimble, Jalen Washington, and Ven-Allen Lubin as rotation players. You can possibly throw in Cade Tyson and James Brown to the mix, I suppose. Outside of Trimble, that lacks any guards or wings. Wilson probably squeezes out Tyson from the rotation, too, which continues to be among the shortest in the ACC under Hubert Davis.

If by some miracle UNC holds onto Cadeau, Trimble, and Powell, I think that group, plus WIlson and an impact transfer or 3, could be the core of a very good team. Trimble has improved a great deal since his freshman season and could be one of the best in the conference next season. I think Cadeau will improve without RJ Davis taking up so many possessions as a ball-dominant guard. Powell seems like a perfect do-it-all wing that could form one of the more athletic forward tandems with Wilson. For these reasons, I am hoping that Evans was right about Cadeau and that Powell takes advantage of the NBA Draft this summer.

To be clear, when I spoke about the mass exodus from Carolina, I was merely quoting publicly available comments from Brendan Marks (I can't find the tweet in question) that he expects virtually the entire Carolina team to depart Chapel Hill. Lubin and Tyson -- who are each playing about half as many minutes as they did a year ago -- likely aren't enjoying their time at Carolina and will depart for warmer pastures.

Drake Powell is a big question mark in terms of his future. Like many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, players before him, he has found his NBA draft stock plummeting since he arrived at UNC. There is no better way to crush your One-and-done dreams than to attend Carolina. I'd say he will probably test the waters, but it is decently likely that he and his 7.1ppg will return to college basketball next season... whether he chooses to return to UNC or portal somewhere else is a darn good question though.

I agree that Seth Trimble has grown into a really nice player and one who is likely to vex us this season and next.

Cameron Boozer with 31/12 to lead his Columbus (FL) to a solid win. Columbus with much more talent than the opponent, Koa Peat’s Perry (AZ). But Perry at least made an impressive run in the 4th quarter. Peat had a lousy first half, good second. Though presumably Peat still has a Duke offer, I assume he’ll choose elesewhere.

Cayden Boozer impresses me, perhaps more than others on EK, not sure. Anyhow, he’s a heady guard, excellent vision and passing. Doesn’t need to score big to affect the game. I’d guess he’ll get starter’s minutes, possibly start as PG next season.

04. Caleb Wilson (6-9 PF): Duke offer, BUT 5 Finalists are Kentucky, Ohio State, Tennessee, UCF, and UNC (plans to announce in January)

On3’s Joe Tipton is reporting that Caleb Wilson is down to Kentucky, Ohio State, and UNC, and will announce next week:

Update: Caleb Wilson will decide between Kentucky and UNC tonight on the NBA on TNT, after the Celtics-Lakers game (around midnight ET).

“I will be committing on NBA on TNT tonight after the Celtics game because of the platform and the shows presence in the city of Atlanta and I will be choosing from UK and UNC,” Wilson told On3.

One of the few times to root for UK?

He may well commit to UNC but I can't imagine why a top ranked recruit would want to do so.

The team is in disarray.

The coach may be on the hot seat.

They have no players in the NBA.

They have a poor record of high draft choices among their one and dones.

The last couple of Crystal Balls for Wilson have come in for UNC. Committing to UNC on the NBA on TNT is going to be a rare time when someone in NBA circles will talk about UNC. It's been 16 years since a UNC alum was in an NBA All-Star game, before Caleb Wilson could remember.
