2025 Men's Basketball Recruiting

No offense to anyone, but creating special rules for athletes feels like a really bad idea in this situation.

Are international college athletes really more deserving than other international college students? I understand that's the bias this board skews towards, but I'm not sure I can get behind a loophole that protects future basketball players at the expense of future doctors and engineers.
But special rules for athletes in all other circumstances are fine? This will be simply another carve out preference for athletes just like they have always, and will always get special treatment.

Is it my imagination or are more schools looking at international players than ever before? Seems college may be catching up the the NBA on this development, and I would assume that NIL makes it substantially more appealing than it once was.

It’s almost like something recently changed but the reasons I can find are NIL…

It's definitely happening in a big way now. Most all of Illinois' rotation is international players. There will be some interesting stats/graphics popping up early in the season on the number of international starters now in CBB.

Louisville could be a big problem this season. If these two international big guys they are bringing in - one from France, one from Greece - turn out to be solid ACC players, they could really push us again for the title.

Unfortunately, I can't remember where I read it, but NIL in college is more lucrative for many of these players than playing in some of the international leagues.

I thought international athletes on student visas could not earn NIL in the U.S. Is that out dated?

He is a big body, and his accomplishments are a mixed bag. At senior level, he is not that good. At his age group he was pretty good, probably because he is 260lbs. I think he will do ok. As a senior he will be 25??

the 2023 Under-20 EuroBasket, he averaged 14.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.9 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game.[16] As a result of his play, he was named to the competition's All-Star Five.[17]

Zougris won another bronze medal with Greece at the 2024 FIBA Under-20 EuroBasket. He averaged 11.6 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game at the tournament.[18] At the conclusion of the competition, he was named to the All-Star Five.[19]

The thing I don't fully understand (and probably should by now) is why are these international kids that are playing professional ball in Europe considered college eligible? Shouldn't they be pros already? It's kind of insane logic that a 21 year old is a freshman with four years of eligibility.

I guess I'm not shocked given how wild westy it is out there right now. But this feels like the latest hack in team building. Until someone just grabs a guy fading out of the NBA. Maybe we can bring back Mason Plumlee next year. Because why not?

Well, it is illegal to earn money if you come into the states on a student visa. I think it may be possible now that these guys are coming to the U.S. on a work visa as a professional basketball player.

I agree that it feels like the system needs some controls and reforms. There really is nothing stopping a college team from just buying the best team in Spain or Italy and having them enroll as students at your university.
