2025 Men's Basketball Recruiting

Well... let no one say I am not willing to step up and admit when I am WRONG WRONG WRONG!!

I sure hope Dame Sarr already has his student visa in hand!!
If we’re going to talk about this, let’s be clear… Dame Sarr and others will be fine if they haven’t been posting about Death to Israel and whatnot. The failure to protect the Jewish population at Harvard is what this has been all about.

I am with those who don’t believe this topic belongs on this board, but since it’s being discussed I had to chime in.

My question would be who is making these determinations and how can it be an objective process. Seems incredibly ripe for abuse, and will almost certainly have a profound negative effect on the demand of international students for American universities.

I'd suggest you broaden your source of news if you truly believe the government's attack on Harvard is about antisemitism. Harvard's Jewish President, Alan Garber, is much better equipped to handle the situation than the guy who defended Charlottesville, don't you think? Don't fall for the propaganda.

People in universities and in the State Department have been making these decisions all along. It’s always been ripe for abuse from within and without.

Thanks for your unbiased opinion.

I think none of us know how the Trump Admin. will handle this. Perhaps they will only look for social posts about Israel/Gaza...

But maybe they will also search for comments about:
  • Trump
  • Abortion
  • Tariffs
  • Ukraine
  • January 6th
  • Climate Change
  • Gender issues (LGBTQ)
  • Taxes
  • Haitians eating dogs
And who knows what else.

My point is not to get into a discussion about the merits or scope of this but to say that we really don't know how this will be carried out and what the impact will be on foreign students seeking to come into the US like Dame Sarr (and a whole host of other college hoops players from overseas).

individual border security people can do pretty much whatever they want, and they often do. I've been dealing with them for 50+ years now.
They don't need a memo from HQ to give you a hard time, so caution is advised.

It would be smart for Dame to buy $100 in Trump coin and post about it. Clears immigration no problem. Welcome to America.

Uh no. This is about demonstration of power, and attacking higher education, including research, because of political views presumed there.

And exclusion of the "other" whether they be immigrants, foreign students, or whoever in one person's mind doesn't belong here. As a Jewish person with strong Jewish identity, I can say that the need to combat anti-semitism, while a real thing on a lot of college campuses, is being used as an excuse for all sorts of attacks on higher education and the people within it. Teaching and learning.

Because we all know social media posts are all completely legit and authentic and real. I simply can't imagine a fan of say, Alabama, creating a burner social media profile of an international Auburn player and putting all sorts of anti-Israel and/or anti-Administration stuff on there to try to screw up said player's ability to get a student visa . . . What an absurd thing this is. But this is our country.

I don’t believe the fight against anti-semitism on campus is only a pretext, but I’m sure I won’t convince you. In any case, I’ve been happy that Duke has able to avoid most of the anti-Semitic ugliness.

We had an interview when entering the US from Europe on Saturday. First in a long, long time. It was friendly, but inquisitive.
I don't know if it depends on the point of re-entry or whether you have Global Pass, but our recent experience was different. We returned from a three-week journey around Scandinavia and the Baltic on May 15th. When we disembarked the flight from London at Orlando International Airport, it took us less than 10 seconds to step in front of the Global Pass scanner and get the green light to proceed, after which the Passport Control officers simply smiled and waved us through with a cordial "Welcome Home" greeting.

Maybe we just don't look as sinister or suspicious as some folks . . . . ;)

I can assure you that this is luck of the draw, though of course you look like a genial, law abiding family. Don't assume this geniality entering the country, though for people of our age and ethnicity, it is typical.

Leaving aside the potentially political aspects of the discussion, which it seems folks have already agreed to disagree on, Dame Sarr and others may not actually be fine, at least in the short term.

The administration has ordered all US consular offices to pause scheduling student visa interviews for an indefinite period of time while they develop the social media vetting. Depending on how long that takes, it could at least delay the arrival of basketball players who may want to get to campus in time for summer terms. And the vetting itself is also likely to slow down the student visa process going forward. If students can't get to campus by the beginning of the fall term, they may not be enrolled and eligible to play until second semester.

In future years, assuming this goes through, foreign players coming to the US and their schools will be prepared for it. But this year it could really throw a monkey wrench into the works.

That assumes that foreign players still want to come to the USA. I could see that changing.
