2024 U.S. Presidential election

Agreed, although one wonders if the Democrats would be in a better position to push back on this vile, borderline eliminationist rhetoric (and borderline is being charitable) if they had not spent the last several years falling over themselves to prove they can be as nasty about "illegals" as the Republicans.
I'm gonna have to ask for some citations to back that statement up.

This is a pretty good bit. But I struggle to give it much credence considering the source. This is a guy who propped up Elon and played his lap dog last year in what was just an embarrassingly bad interview. The same Elon who claims a decline in reproduction is the greatest threat to Western Civilization and has offered to give Taylor Swift a baby in response to her support of Harris. So 🪛 you Maher and your fake principles.
I like Maher. I don’t always agree with him but very few people can always be right like me.

Can someone who understands the stock market explain to me why DJT stock went up over 25% in 20 minutes today? It then fell pretty quickly but not to where it was.

I generally endorse the sentiment of this piece, namely that Democrats have endorsed the premise of Republican border fear mongering, namely that migrants are a social ill that must be stopped by force. It's less persuasive to call out Trump's dangerous rhetoric about migrants when you've spent the last several months crowing about how you tried to pass the man's own border bill. There's also been continuity between Trump and Biden in that both have overseen an illegal gutting of the asylum system, well covered by This American Life.

Bruce Springsteen is a billionaire too, but he's still a champion for the blue collar worker after all these years.

Again, I don't care for her music, but it speaks to people. I think her songs are quite mediocre, but it's a fool's errand for me to convince my 14 year old that Joni Mitchell's Hejira is much better than any Taylor album.
Bruce — The Wild, The Innocent & the E Street Shuffle. Eclectic and awesome. It’s my favorite.

And Joni Mitchell Hejira……wow. Joni, like Bruce, is a genius songwriter and has at least ten phenomenal albums, but this one is truly special.

And you’re right in that Taylor Swift’s music cannot even be mentioned in the same breath as that of Joni Mitchell. But these young people don’t even know who she is. 🤷‍♂️

Thank you for the response.

I can't read The Intercept piece (not signing up) but the headline and subheadline told me all I needed to know. The source is described as "left-wing" in wikipedia, so I guess any compromise is bad. I'm a liberal leaning moderate, and I support strong borders. So we'll agree to disagree.

And I apologize that I don't have time to listen to a 32-minute podcast so I can't evaluate its claims.

I just don't think that the Ds and Rs can be equated on border issues. Again, agree to disagree.

Not if he doesn’t sell anytime soon. If he does sell, look for quick SEC action.
Of course he could have proxies & family members with long positions.

It seemed he was constantly out there making statements while president that he knew would move the market short term.

I've never understood why Republicans or Democrats don't stand up and say that immigration made this country great! Point out all the famous people that were immigrants and are now thought of as iconic Americans. Einstein, Tesla, Sergey Brin, Elon Musk, Andre Grow, Enrico Fermi, Levi Strauss, Ralph Lauren, Dr. James Naismith, Alexander Graham Bell, etc. The list could probably be shortened and focus tested to get five that would surprise folks and make an impact.

Simply state that America is a nation of immigrants. Every generation has leapt ahead because of folks coming to America to make a better life for themselves and their family. I would love for someone to embrace immigration.

Heck, my family (if lore is to be believed) was founded by criminal immigrants. Tales of my great great grandfather mugging someone on the docks of some European city to steal their boat ticket. Further tales of my great grandfather and his counterfeiting operations in Detroit before his family caught wind of what he was doing and dumped his press in Lake St. Clair. Of course, it's all just memories passed down.
