2024 NBA Summer League

It's a few days late, but here are the 8 former Blue Devils in Summer League:

(Source)

Marques Bolden, Golden State Warriors
Kyle Filipowski, Utah Jazz
AJ Griffin, Houston Rockets
Trevor Keels, Houston Rockets
Jared McCain, Philadelphia 76ers
Wendell Moore Jr, Detroit Pistons
DJ Steward, Chicago Bulls
Dariq Whitehead, Brooklyn Nets

Plus 2 Duke-adjacent players to also monitor:

Alex O'Connell, New York Knicks
Jordan Tucker, Philadelphia 76ers

Moore was not on Detroit's originally announced summer roster -- possibly because his trade from Minnesota was not yet cleared by the league -- but he's been playing for the Pistons in Las Vegas. Aside from checking the box scores from game to game, there's no source that has compiled all of the updated rosters for Summer League. (NBA.com is terrible this year because their rosters seemingly include everyone with the organization, even veteran superstars who are definitely not playing in Vegas.)

If you did want a compilation of the originally announced rosters, Jonathan Von Tobel of sports betting site VSiN put together a Google Spreadsheet of teams and names here.

While we're on the subject, it's never too late to offer gambling tips for Summer League and here's mine:

1. Don't. The teams often don't care who wins, so why should you?

No Ceilings offers a 2024 NBA Summer League TV Guide that goes team-by-team, providing each roster graphic and telling you who to watch for. It's kind of the same thing I did in this thread, but with more descriptions and all on one really long page.

While I'm linking, The Ringer has A Bronny-Free Preview of NBA Summer League and Five Takeaways from 2024 NBA Summer League So Far.

Flip had by far his best game today in a win over Toronto scoring 20 on 9/16, 2/3 on threes, 0/1 FT, 7 rebs, 2 asst, 3 steals, a block with 3 TOs and 5 fouls in 26 minutes.

* Of course, the Cheater fans list 8, trying to include Auburn's Walker Kessler and Mississippi State's Garrison Brooks as their own. (The source is Tar Heel Tribune, so it's not the official UNC program doing the miscounting here.)

They're not the only ones. A few Michigan sites try to claim Colin Castleton, but he transferred to Florida. It's true that there are 7 former Syracuse players in Summer League, but the Orange can't actually claim Jesse Edwards (West Virginia), Joe Girard (Clemson), or Quincy Guerrier (Illinois). Your fans tried to Heel up your numbers, but I'm not falling for it.

Texas Tech at least makes the proper distinction, naming their 7 players, and also mentioning previous Red Raiders Kevin McCullar (Kansas), Terrence Shannon Jr (Illinois), and Jaylon Tyson (Cal). This is the way: don't claim them, and don't forget about them.

Speaking of McCullar, he was named to the Knicks summer roster, but isn't playing because he is still recovering from the bone bruise on his knee that ended his career at Kansas:

Brooks did four years at UNC (theoretically earning an incredibly worthless degree) so I would give UNC that one. Personally, that is my distinction - if someone did a post-grad year somewhere then both schools can take credit. If someone transfers before getting a degree, then their final school counts.

Yes, I know, what are these degree things you are talking about...

I like this new verb (Helms Bakery “national championship”…)

Years ago, there was an awards show -- probably the 1995 Emmys -- where actor Ted Danson was presenting. As he walked across the stage, the announcer said, "And now, from Gulliver's Travels, Ted Danson."

Danson got to the microphone and paused for a bit, then said in a deadpan tone, "Gulliver's Travels. That's funny," before launching into his prepared remarks.

He'd just finished 11 seasons of Cheers in 1993, but instead the announcer associated him with a TV miniseries that had yet to come out. It was awkward and yet emblematic of the entertainment industry, always fixated on what's most recent.

The same applies here. It doesn't matter that Garrison Brooks has a UNC degree and played 4 times as many games there as he did for Mississippi State. The most recent team gets the credit, so UNC can't claim him the way they can claim Armando Bacot. And it works both ways; UNC can claim Cormac Ryan over Notre Dame, and Pete Nance over Northwestern.

From a Duke perspective, there's not much outrage this summer, because Butler's Jordan Tucker was barely a Blue Devil, and Alex O'Connell started more games and played more minutes in his last 2 seasons at Creighton than he did in his first 3 seasons at Duke. But wait until 2025 Summer League, when the roll call might look like this:

Kyle Filipowski
Cooper Flagg
Khaman Maluach
Jared McCain
Tyrese Proctor

Dariq Whitehead

Jaylen Blakes
Jaemyn Brakefield
Henry Coleman III
Mark Mitchell
Jeremy Roach

This is how I will present their names, and yes, it's going to hurt a little.

Didn't Roach graduate? That makes him deserving of blue in my book.

That is a better example of my argument. Thanks.

And my argument is that your book doesn't matter. My book doesn't matter. Ted Danson's book doesn't matter. Next year, the pro basketball industry will view Jeremy Roach as a Baylor guy. Baylor Baylor Baylor. Practically tattooed on his forehead.

"Duke degree, you say? The Brotherhood for life? That's nice, but we don't care. Baylor guy!"

Well, on a Duke fan forum, I think our books matter. By your reasoning, we can expect to never see Jeremy on the walls of Cameron's hallways, and I doubt that very much to be true.

"Pro basketball industry?" Maybe we should define some terms?

You're equating a Duke building and a Duke-affiliated message board with the pro basketball industry. Those are separate things.

Next year, some NBA team will likely sign Jeremy Roach to a contract for Summer League, fall training camp, or something better. That franchise isn't going to remove all traces of Jeremy Roach from Durham. They aren't going to go into his parents' home and burn his Duke diploma. They aren't going to Eternal Sunshine any Roach memories from the rest of the Brotherhood. And they aren't going to tamper with your book or mine.

"Pro basketball industry?" Maybe we should define some terms?

The next level. Whoever it is that puts him on a summer roster and says that his team is Baylor. Not Duke/Baylor, just Baylor. It's a harsh reality, failing to recognize 4 seasons at Duke like it was 11 seasons of Cheers. I'm just preparing you.

This controversy has erupted on the WNBA side because DiJonai Carrington only gets Baylor recognition and she wants Stanford listed too. I sympathize with her to some extent because Tara VanDerveer had a policy of always trying to keep all 15 scholarship filled because she did not want to deny a player the chance at a Stanford scholarship even if she did not end up being a national championship-caliber player. Whoever qualified for a medical redshirt first was going to get the last scholarship for the 2020-21 season and it ended up being Anna Wilson, although I suppose her brother Russell could have afforded for her to walk-on. Stanford has plenty of WNBA players though so they probably would be clowned for claiming her and Duke would probably be in the same boat on the NBA side. I think that it is fair for Ivy League schools to claim students who graduated and still had additional eligibility since they had no choice but to finish their careers elsewhere.

On the foul front, it is unfortunately just Kyle on Thursday with 9 fouls.

Another annual feature: after Richard Jefferson's 2022 rant about NBA Draft 1st rounders skipping their second Summer League, I take a look at the latest sophomore class.

So which players from the 1st round of the 2023 NBA Draft are playing 2024 Summer League? Participants in bold:

1. Victor Wembanyama, Spurs
2. Brandon Miller, Hornets
3. Scoot Henderson, Blazers
4. Amen Thompson, Rockets
5. Ausar Thompson, Pistons
6. Anthony Black, Magic
7. Bilal Coulibaly, Wizards
8. Jarace Walker, Pacers
9. Taylor Hendricks, Jazz

10. Cason Wallace, Thunder
11. Jett Howard, Magic
12. Dereck Lively II, Mavericks
13. Gradey Dick, Raptors
14. Jordan Hawkins, Pelicans
15. Kobe Bufkin, Hawks
16. Keyonte George, Jazz

17. Jalen Hood-Schifino, Lakers
18. Jaime Jaquez Jr, Heat
19. Brandin Podziemski, Warriors
20. Cam Whitmore,, Rockets
21. Noah Clowney, Nets
22. Dariq Whitehead, Nets
23. Kris Murray, Blazers
24. Olivier-Maxence Prosper, Mavericks
25. Marcus Sasser, Pistons
26. Ben Sheppard, Pacers
27. Nick Smith Jr, Hornets
28. Brice Sensabaugh, Jazz
29. Julian Strawther, Nuggets
30. Kobe Brown, Clippers

It's a good turnout. 22 out of 30 is 73.3 percent, which is right in Jefferson's "70 to 75 percent" sweet spot. It might have been higher, but Bilal Coulibaly is doing Olympic things this summer, while Jalen Hood-Schifino is injured. Of the others, I would argue that Scoot Henderson and Cason Wallace should be playing.

Keyonte George played for the Jazz in Salt Lake City, but was shut down prior to Las Vegas (as was third-year pro Walker Kessler). He got the reps in, so he counts. Conversely, Jamie Jaquez Jr skipped the California Classic because he was on the USA Select Team, but was later added to the Vegas roster, so he counts as well.

And even though he isn't playing, Dereck Lively II showed up to support Dariq Whitehead:
