The funny thing about all the NIL numbers being thrown around is that it does not appear to be in anyone's best interest to dispute what gets reported, no matter how flimsy or frivolous.

Agents are happy having people believe their clients are prospering, while schools (like Duke, and everyone else) don't mind if people get the impression that, "hey, Duke's paying more than anyone" when it comes to NIL. No reason for Duke to dispel this notion.

In any event, it does appear that Duke is being very competitive in NIL, and that's a good thing.

Speaking of Mensah, I saw an article (okay it was on 'brobible.com' but still) in which Mensah's agent apparently revealed on some podcast that 'every NIL agency' takes 20% on clients' NIL deals, which the article equates to conning his clients given that NFL/NBA agents only take 3-5% -- I admit to knowing nothing about how sports agency works, but I could imagine that Mensah and others aren't very happy about learning this.

NIL deals and NFL/NBA deals are two entirely different animals...the good news is that whatever Mensah's agent has to say isn't terribly relevant.
I've read long threads on this elsewhere, and without solid data it's all pretty much meaningless.

Really? I feel like based on what high end college athletics has been over the past few years the recruitment of Mensah seems entirely logical. What is confusing or mystifying about it (other than the exact specifics of his salary).
Yes. In what universe does it make sense that minor league football players make millions while whole realms of society's critical infrastructure go begging for funds?

And just how ridiculous is it when $4M over two years makes sense while $4M over one year does not?

Of course, my name is really Pollyanna.

I'm sorry, I keep swearing off this whole forum, but I can't help kibitzing and I also can't help chiming in when I see something stated that makes me see red. I'll promise once again to try to stay away. Carry on.

Ahh, I getcha. You find the whole excessive monetization of sports to be absurd and a poor use of society's dollars. I do understand that view.

But I would merely say that when you look at the revenue generated by college football (and basketball), paying the players a salary commensurate with the monies earned by their sports is more than fair in my mind. A top end QB is absolutely worth millions a year to a power conference team.

I don’t mean to make light of it, but you are Crazie…

I've made this point several times. The schools look like big players. The athlete sounds like he's a big deal. The conference gets more notoriety. And if the kid moves on, the bar has been set.

The only negative is that whether or not the $8m number just horse manure, the next QB is going to be asking for $9m.

And that is when you pull out the actual contract that has $4 mil in total written on it and say, "don't believe everything you read on the internet. Now, our offer is $5 mil, which is more than what we paid the last guy."

I'm not sure the money spent on NIL is necessarily money that would otherwise be going somewhere "better." It seems at least plausible that the big money that donors are throwing at NIL would otherwise have been spent on overpaying the coach, making the new jumbotron a few feet bigger, or making the new practice facility that much more luxe (or spent on paying players in a more black or gray market manner). To the extent the money going to players would instead be headed to coach salaries or putting a DJ booth in the University of Alabama Player Performance Center for Excellence, I'd say NIL is at worst a wash, social utility wise.

Carolina's starting QB hits the road. Makes me wonder if BB has someone incoming up his sleeve.
Might be more fruitful to wonder if UNC actually even has BB incoming.

Presently, there is not a fully executed and signed contract between Belichick and UNC, sources told CBS Sports -- and the school confirmed -- this week. Industry sources say that could create to a legal gray area about how much, if any, of a buyout would exist if Belichick left for the pros.
The article does note that it's not unusual for there to be a decent period of time between entering into an agreement and getting the contract finalized, but still, given the appeal he no doubt has to at least some NFL teams, and his, ahem, history, until he's there on the sidelines during a game....

Regardless, given his performance this year, Criswell isn't a big loss, but it's still notable coming this late.

I hear they are bringing some under-the-radar guy from CA named Brom Tady who looks much older than his birth certificate suggests

It was announced just hours ago that Bill has brought in 2 more assistant coaches to UNC. If he is eying a return to the NFL he isn't really acting like it (unless this is an elaborate ploy to get his son the head coaching gig, but it seems like screwing over Carolina weeks after taking the job is not a good way to ensure his son gets treated right by UNC).

I feel sorta bad for Criswell. This was his second stint at UNC. He was 4* out of Morrilton, AR (same high school as former Duke DB Josh Trezvant). He committed to UNC, rode the pine a couple years, then transferred to Arkansas, where he's still a backup. Arkansas brings back Petrino as OC who brings in his own QB, so Criswell transfers again, back to UNC. He's still the backup, but gets the starting gig after Max Johnson goes down in the opening game. Finally, in his fifth year, Criswell has a chance for real PT. He sorta stinks. The team stinks. Alas.

I don’t feel bad. He loves that stinking pile of cheating and arrogance enough to commit there twice. And he did get a shot, and performed pretty close to exactly how I’d like a uNC QB to perform. Thank you, Jacolby!
