2024 Football Portal News

I'm old fashioned. But I liked what I saw from the two remaining incumbents last year. I don't think we are in play for someone who is dramatically better than them. Or if we are, I would rather spend the money it would take to get such a player elsewhere. Reward loyalty. I know this concept is completely dead, but I think that's what we should do. If Arch Manning calls and says he will come for free, sure, take the call, but that's not happening. So reward loyalty.

Some people have commented on them not playing this year. Loftis played a lot last year. He knows what he is doing. We know what we are getting. We are not completely starting over. And he has now had a year practicing in Manny's system.

Seems like a no-brainer to me. But again, I'm still living in the dark ages.

And for full disclosure, last year I would have been just as happy if we had stuck with them and not taken Murphy. I am appreciative of what he has done for Duke this year. But I was OK with where we were. Perhaps that is an attitude that encourages mediocrity, but I am OK with it.

Count me in the "not surprised" camp. But I just don't get it ... why the heck did he use the portal to get to Duke in the first place?

Well, his last “play” was entering the transfer portal while declining to participate in Duke’s biggest game in ten years.
This is what I don’t understand. Wouldn’t playing in the biggest game of the year be the way to highlight your skills? But I guess the timing of the portal and the fear of injury (or stinking it up) outweighs that?

Duke will likely be better off developing the best of these and investing the "portal QB money" in a better offensive line.
Yep. Judging by our last transfer portal haul, it seems like we "spent" all our money on Murphy. The other guys were from FCS schools and the like. The staff did a great job finding players that weren't highly rated but played really well for us.

I think Loftis could approximate Murphy's production next year, especially if we improve in the running game.

The timing of the portal - he probably needs to be enrolled at his next school by the time the Gator Bowl is played.
It's a silly thing. The bowl season doesn't really fit into the CFB calendar anymore. Coaches leave, players transfer and opt out. It's clear that so many are ready to turn the page at the end of the regular season. But... the bowls remain a ratings bonanza, so they'll keep scheduling them - even Duke/Temple in the 2018 Independence Bowl got 1.8 million viewers.

Because he wasn't going to play at all in Texas. It makes complete sense. Go somewhere that you're guaranteed a starting spot. Then you can showcase your skills and transfer to a contender where you have a better chance to win a ring and play on Sundays.

The NCAA has turned sports into a business for the players (it has always been one for the schools and coaches). Once you do that, it's difficult to blame the players for making business decisions.

not close. they haven't even started yet.
Funny!

I'm a professor at a different university, and we've already completed the bulk of exams (all are finished tomorrow). Typically, Duke finishes well before we do, which is the reason for my comment.

People do like to think that Duke sports is somehow immune to some lf these things. Or above it. Or separate in some way.
True, and along those lines, they like to harshly criticize those who point out that um, not really, not in a lot of ways.... I mean, as of now, Duke FB is nothing but a minor league feeder for bigger schools.....players and coaches. . And when and if, Bad Bill Belechik turns NC "officially and publicly" into an NFL feeder......well, just imagine....

Evidently the staff was not surprised, stuff has been going on...we'll know more soon...but already ESPN is tying the Tulane QB to Duke, Manny (according to Devils Den) will be very active acquiring a starting QB. This is the new world.
I'm OK with it...Murphy did some great things, though amazingly unorthodox (wouldn't run, not great pocket awareness, great but inconsistent arm)...as for Duke becoming a feeder school (^), no. Duke has more NIL money than most realize.

Not shocked but disappointed. This is college sports today. Free Agency. I'm slowly losing my enthusiasm for college sports. We've gone from the 4-year players like Christian, Bobby and Grant to a QB that didn't run the ball because he might get hurt. Well, we see why now. It's not on the players, it's on the NCAA.

GoDuke!
