2024 Football Portal News

Well I am pretty surprised, and I bet the staff is too. The way this season unfolded, it was clear the staff went all in on Murphy's development, down to making him a starter as a sophomore and never benching him despite some tough moments. It was clear they considered him the future.

These days, we shouldn't be shocked by anyone transferring, least not a QB with his kind of pedigree. But still, I think the staff would have done some things differently if they thought this was coming.

The game is more nakedly transactional now. He may have used us to get a bag, but we got a TD record season out of it along with 9 wins. I suppose you have to accept it, however unsatisfying.
You think they would have stopped using their QB during a potential ten win season to develop a lesser talent for the following year?

I suspect not. I suspect also that they knew there was a distinct possibility that a top tier QB transferring from Texas might not be around long term. I also suspect that Riley Leonard hasn't exactly become a cautionary tale, with Notre Dame playing for a chance at a national title.

Did we learn nothing from the end of last season? Did we think it was an abberation? This happens every year to every team. Our coaching staff is much much more aware of the landscape of college athletics, thankfully.

I guess the silver lining is that Murphy had to be the highest paid player on the team. Perhaps that money can be put to good use elsewhere.

Still, this leaves the staff in a tough spot. We need another QB for next year's roster. But surely a decent QB transferring in is going to want to start. And I don't expect Grayson and Henry will want to stay if they get recruited over again. I suppose there could be an Ivy League QB who doesn't mind sitting on the bench.

I am worried about the bowl game. Our backups attempted a total of one pass all season. 1! That is unheard of. I can't believe the staff would do that if they thought it was likely Murphy would transfer.

I am sure they are aware of the possibility. It would be foolishly not to plan for such a contingency. But the staff's actions, including redshirting Grayson and giving Henry just one pass attempt, suggests to me that neither was being groomed for a potential starting role next year. Of course, things change. For all we know, the staff may already have our next rental QB targeted in the portal.

People do like to think that Duke sports is somehow immune to some lf these things. Or above it. Or separate in some way.
which is odd given we're barely 6 months out from <checks notes> the entire basketball team transferring.

okay fine those likely weren't as $ motivated as this...but they're two sides of the same "welcome to this week in college sports" coin.

With the caveat a team can never have too many quarterbacks, we’re in good shape for next season with three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. Grayson Loftis, Henry Belin and incoming freshman Dan Mahan.

At least he’s still at Duke completing his exams and papers I assume. Hahahahahahahahhahah😖
Actually, if he wants to play at another school he is! The only remaining requirement is that you are academically eligible.

Of course, I bet exams at Duke are already over at this point.

So Murphy discovered he liked to run for pay dirt and now he’s taking his ball and running away. Screw ‘im. It’s time for Loftis or Belin IV to show us what they’ve got!
We pull for the laundry. The players, for the most part, don't. That is why I try to refrain from becoming emotionally involved in a player.

The days of Mickey Mantle have been over for fifty years. I don't wish transfers harm but I don't wish them well.

Literally said "What the f*&^?!" to absolutely no one upon seeing a tweet about Maalik.

It's weak sauce from him, but go out and get another talented depth chart casualty from a power. Rinse and repeat unless you're really convinced by the guys behind Maalik this season.
