2024 Football Portal News

should have two years eligibility left, someone on a board said he had three but I don't see how, he's been a starter the last two seasons unless these is still some Covid jive going on..
I find all the folks wondering about eligibility to be so cute. We are in the "everyone is a free agent at the end of every season" era. Getting more than one season out of some of these kids is not easy.

That is an article from August 31, before the season really got going.

Leonard is not currently regarded among the top 10 QBs in the current draft class (Sanders, Ward, Milroe, Beck, Ewers, Gabriel, and Rourke all well ahead of him). Of course, things can change with the combine and other workouts. I think Riley certainly has a decent chance to be drafted.
Thanks, Jason. I should have read more closely before posting. Another site (from a day or two ago) projects him being drafted on Day 2. Personally, I think he can play in the NFL and will.

Agreed and it could start driving coaching decisions regarding burning redshirts: why save eligibility if it’s likely going to help someone else, not you?

Murphy to Bama? Is this a done deal or just speculation? Apparently, they don't have much depth at QB if this year's starter (whose name I forget) goes pro or transfers but I'm not sure I see MM as Alabama starting QB material. No doubt he has potential and a powerful arm but very little mobility and his throwing accuracy is suspect. Plus, what he will see most weeks in the SEC is much better (faster, stronger and better football players) than what he faced at Duke.

Utter speculation by the author, I believe, after a closer look.

Every article from TWSN is speculative and not news at all. We already dealt with this earlier in the thread with their Arch Manning to Ole Miss piece.

You have to be careful. There are NBA sites out there where, and I am not exaggerating, every article proposes a trade that is not in the works at all. I don't know if their contributors are robots, or just really bored humans.

A non-mobile QB playing against SEC defenses? It’s a bold strategy, Cotton…

and Covid related rules + redshirts - seems to allow them to play til they're like 28

Alabama’s #2 and #3 are better than Maalik. Hell, I saw their #4 make a great scramble and 40-yard pass.

If Maalik could not get on the field at Texas, a year at Duke isn’t gonna help get him on the field in Tuscaloosa.

(And I like Maalik).
To be fair…he started 2 games for Texas last season winning both including a win over #23 Kansas State.

Penn State loses their version of Brandon Connette it kind of sounds like....imagine this.....he was not so much a 'back up' as he was a situational and wildcat type QB.....played a lot.

The DBR Pod raises an issue about whether it is time for the end of bowls? ESPN Events owns around half of the bowls in order to provide content during the Holiday season. The bowl contracts have been and will continue to be an issue for holding a CFP. If I was making a crystal ball prediction, it would be that CFP games except the Finals would move to campus sites as the CFP evolves. The Pros: More money for the schools; less cost for fans (travel, time off etc); but mostly why pay people in ugly jackets to host a game which the colleges already do 7-8 times per year?

I honestly do not understand the angst over Marshall pulling out of the Independence Bowl. A large part of the exodus was a result of the HC leaving to take a job at noted powerhouse S Miss. Are the players expected to show more "loyalty" to Marshall than the HC? The players are doing what is best for them, just like the HC did. Marshall also is acting in its self interest by not playing in a bowl game at which it would lose money. Part of the justification for bowls was it was a "reward" to the players in terms of fun in the sun (Boise, Boston, Detroit NYC etc being noted warm winter vacation spots) and the swag bags. Players now are paid, and perhaps could be rewarded based on the number of wins as coaches often are with schools using the money they would lose playing in the bowl to fund the payouts.

The problem is not with the date of the portal, but with players being expected to risk their health to play in an exhibition game which benefit mostly the local Bowl hosts. Would changing the date really change the decision of whether to play for a player who has decided to enter the portal? If so, why?

I get what you are saying but actually most games are just exhibition games for most teams. I guess you'd be fine with Duke and Ole Miss scrapping the Gator Bowl. When you think about it, it really is just an exhibition game too. Pretty much all our games are, since at bottom this is just entertainment for fans. And I don't think anyone here is blaming the Marshall coach or the Marshall players. We are criticizing a system that places fans last by creating incentives inimical to the reasons for our fan interest.

Agree and without fans there is no NIL and fewer scholarships for a “non-revenue” sport.
