2024 Football Portal News

FWIIW, Mensah is listed by ESPN as its #1 transferee. ON3 has him at #19. The revolving door with Murphy/Mensah must have been brewing for some time. Assuming Murphy is ticketed to Auburn in a last ditch effort to save their coach, that should be added drama to all these machinations.

I hope we can also get the players needed to have a much stronger running game. If we had that this season, talking about the playoffs wouldn't have been unreasonable.

We may never know fully what went on behind the scenes with all this (much like similar situations on the basketball team last year with Maliq/Mason and Sean/TJ), so I'm not going to lose sleep trying to parse that out.

What I DO know is that, regardless of what went on behind the scenes, the fact that Duke was able to (quickly!) grab a commitment from someone ranked near the top of all the transfer portal rankings is a great momentum builder for the program; ironically, this is somewhat similar to the impact of getting Maalik last year. It seems like the athletic department, and the University more generally, has adapted quickly to the new era of college athletics and the necessity of the transfer portal, which is great to see from a sports fan perspective (even if we have some moral reservations about it given our love of the "student-athlete").

If Coach Diaz can keep the rest of the core of the team together, there's every reason to believe we can build momentum into next year now. Given the reality that football success is going to be important when the inevitable next cycle of realignment occurs, that's a big relief.

The next step for this football program, one which I think we all recognize but don't have any good solutions for, is figuring out how to get a respectable crowd to Wallace Wade on a consistent basis. Putting a winning team out there helps, but hasn't been enough. I hope we can put all our best minds on that problem so that we can take the next step forward.

You need more home games against teams that travel well.

All the food locations in Brodhead contributed to NIL for Mensah. Bullocks and Cosmic Cantina also pitched in. I'm sure of it!

What’s the chance he is here more than 1 year? 10%?
Well if he means what he says about getting a Duke degree, he'll have to stay for a while.
He said the allure of a Duke degree also proved a factor in his decision.

"It's a prestigious university, and a great education is also important to me," Mensah said. "It's just a family out here. I wanted to be part of that."
